Admission Into the Honors College

Incoming freshmen:
To apply to the Honors College, submit a Kent State admission application during the fall semester of your senior year in high school. (Your application to Kent State must be completed by February 1). We also recommend that you indicate your interest in the Honors College by sending an e-mail to Dr. Deborah Craig. The Honors College will contact qualified applicants. There is no separate application to the Honors College and no additional application fee.
Admitted students are usually in
- the top 15% of their high school class,
- have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5,
- and score a 26 or higher ACT composite (1180 SAT total on Reading and Math).
Scholarship recipients need
- a minimum class rank of 92%,
- an unweighted 3.6 GPA,
- and a 28 ACT composite (1260 SAT total on Reading and Math).
Each applicant is automatically evaluated for scholarship eligibility. If you think that your transcript does not adequately reflect your abilities, we invite you to write a brief essay of explanation. If you don’t qualify to join the Honors College as an entering freshman, you may apply to join after one semester of college coursework with a 3.2 or higher GPA.
College Students:Most students enter the program as freshmen; however, you may apply to join after one semester of college coursework with a 3.2 or higher college GPA. College Student Application
The number of Honors courses required (including a possible Senior Honors Thesis/Project) will vary from student to student based on your entry point. Your Honors advisor will determine the number of Honors course requirements at your first meeting. Students who have completed their Liberal Education Requirements (or have completed Ohio’s Transfer Module) and are unable to take Honors coursework will be required to do a Senior Honors Thesis/Project.
Scholarship eligibility: If you are transferring in with a 3.5 or higher college GPA, you may be eligible to apply for one of our $1000 Honors Academic Achievement Awards (HAAA). Should you not be eligible for an Honors scholarship at this time, you may apply for a HAAA after completing two semesters in Honors as long as you have a 3.5 or higher GPA at Kent. HAAA Application
