Member Expectations and Requirements


Completion of Honors Work: Member in Good Standing
To be a member in good standing, Honors students are required to complete Honors work each semester and meet with their assigned Honors academic advisor.  Students are also expected to attend Honors College activities and events.

All courses that are counted toward meeting Honors requirements must be graded. We heartily encourage every student to engage in at least one experience of individualized study.

Grade Point Average

Honors students must maintain a cumulative g.p.a. of at least 3.0 to retain membership in good standing in the Honors College. Students who lose their Honors membership normally forfeit  enrollment in Honors classes in the semester immediately following dismissal.  Students with scholarships are required to maintain a 3.25 g.p.a.

Graduation from Honors

Students may choose between a thesis and non-thesis option to earn recognition for graduation from Honors.  All Honors students must complete at least 24 credit hours of Honors work.

Freshman Honors Colloquium: Thinking, talking, listening, reading, and writing

All first-year Honors students are required to enroll in Freshman Honors Colloquium (FHC). FHC is a two-semester sequence (HONR 10197 and HONR 10297) which totals six credit hours and takes the place of the basic College Writing sequence (ENG 11011 and ENG 21011).  The only exception to this requirement is for the student who has already completed a college-level freshman English sequence for credit at an institution of higher education.  Effective Fall 2013, students who have completed the college-level English sequence are required to enroll in the 3-credit-hour Honors course, HONR 13597: The Western Identity.

  • Advanced Placement Credit for ENG 11011 does not exempt a student from taking FHC.
  • Failure to complete the two-semester FHC sequence satisfactorily may result in dismissal from the Honors College.

Failure to make normal progress toward meeting Honors requirements may result in probation or dismissal from the Honors College.
