HONR 40197: Be Smarter Than Your Phone

Instructor: John West, Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University

The smart phone is changing the world. It has revolutionized the way we communicate and do business. This three-hour, team-taught course provides a general understanding of the technologies that make the smart phone possible, how the smart phone has changed the patterns and nature of our communications and the implications for marketing and business. The technology section of the course will introduce the basic principles of operation of the ensemble of technologies that make the smart phone possible (display, touch screen, battery, and semiconductor technologies). The course will discuss how the always on, always connected smart phone has brought power and alienation to the individual and has transformed our entertainment, our politics, and our relationships. This course will examine how the smart phone is expanding how we shop, bank, and sell ourselves and our products. Finally this course will give a better appreciation for the ingenuity that makes the cell phone’s growing impact possible.
