Continuing Students & Transfer Students
Students who are currently attending or are transferring to Kent State University who demonstrate potential for academic excellence may apply for membership in the Honors College.
Admission is selective and requires a 3.5 cumulative GPA in all post-secondary coursework, a minimum of 12 credit hours of earned academic credit toward fulfillment of a baccalaureate degree, and a reasonable chance of fulfilling the requirements for graduation from the Honors College. Students who have completed Honors work at another institution of higher education will be given preference.
Students who were not admitted as incoming freshmen who wish to join the Honors College must meet the following admission requirements:
- Have achieved at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and earned at least 12 semester hours of college credit eligible toward a baccalaureate degree.
- Have a reasonable chance of fulfilling the requirements for graduation from the Honors College.
Note: All students transferring from another institution of higher education who are interested in joining The Honors College must also complete an undergraduate application for admission to Kent State University and be admitted to the university
Students who are interested in joining the Honors College to complete a Senior Honors Thesis/Project will be given preference. Interested students should plan to attend a Thesis Information Meeting in the semester prior to the planned semester of admission.
The Honors College application may be submitted online and includes two required essays and a faculty recommendation.
Continuing student applications are accepted and processed twice a year.
- All application pieces must be submitted by Dec. 1 for admission in the spring semester (decisions will be made by Jan. 15 or the first day of spring classes, whichever comes first).
- All application pieces must be submitted by May 1 for admission in the fall semester (decisions will be made by June 15).
Students who join the Honors College as continuing students are required to enroll in an Honors course or the Senior Honors Thesis/Project in the semester of admission. An admission decision is contingent upon enrollment in one of these two options. For this reason, admissions decisions will be made in part upon the availability of Honors courses.
