Safety and security policies at Kent State are based on a philosophy that advocates a proactive rather than reactive approach.

Kent State's Security Aide program is nationally recognized for excellence. Student security aides are in direct contact with University Police Services via two-way radios. Every residence hall complex is patrolled from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. every day. The security aides receive 40 hours of intense training prior to assuming their duties. They learn CPR, first aid, fire prevention and emergency procedures. The most widely used service offered by the Security Aide program is the escort service. Security aides provide escorts across campus each night between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Security for residence hall students and their property is also provided by controlling access to all residence halls. Residents are able to enter their buildings or corridors by using entrance keys. The residential areas are locked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to allow only residents of a hall, their escorted guests and authorized personnel to enter. Nonresident guests must be escorted by residents at all times. The residence hall system has five central area desks, some of which are staffed 24 hours a day for students' convenience.

Students living in any of Kent State's residence halls may report criminal activity, emergencies or safety hazards to their residence hall director, their resident assistant or a security aide. All residence hall living areas are locked 24 hours a day. Residents of Allerton Family Apartments may report criminal activity or other security concerns to the coordinator for family housing, to their resident adviser or to Residential Security Aides who patrol the complex.
