T: Transitions: College to Career
What if I want to live off-campus?
Kent State has a 2-year residency requirement for living on campus, unless you are 21 by the start of an academic year, live within 50 miles, or have a few other approved exceptions. To see these exceptions and apply for an exemption, check out Residence Services' Mandatory Housing Exemption Form here
and Petition for Contract Release form here
What is a Resident Assistant?
Your Resident Assistant (RA) is a student employee who lives on your floor. Their job is to make sure that you are transitioning well, as well as holding you accountable to the rules of living on-campus.
They are a great resource for you! They are here to help you get acclimated to campus, answer your questions, and to be there for you when you need them.
What is a Residence Hall Director?
Each of our residence halls is overseen by a full-time, master’s-level Residence Hall Director (RHD). This individual supervises the RAs of the building and works closely with the hall council to provide a variety of opportunities to the residents. Your RHD will be an excellent person for you to seek out anytime you have a question or need assistance while living on campus.
I’m feeling homesick. What things can I do to make me feel better?
Being homesick in college is more common than most students want to admit. With these 5 tips, however, dealing with it can be a little easier.
These tips from CollegeLife.com can help you:
1. Call Home
2. Go visit home – once
3. Go out with your college friends (there are always plenty of events on campus)
4. Call a friend from back home
5. Get out of your room
You should also join a few student organizations or talk to your RA. They will be able to help you deal with your homesickness.
My roommate and I aren’t getting along. What can I do?
Start by talking to your roommate. We encourage you to fill out a roommate agreement so you can be on the same page with some of your areas of conflict.
If the roommate agreement doesn’t help, talk to your Resident Assistant. They will be able to help you talk to your roommate or try to switch rooms.
How can I study abroad?
Whether you want to go for a semester, a year, or just a few weeks, Kent State University has a study abroad
opportunity to fit your needs and your budget. With Kent State campuses in Florence, Italy, Geneva, Switzerland, and a multitude of exchange program partnerships with other countries, you can easily find an opportunity that meets your educational objectives and career goals.
I only studied a half hour every day in high school. How much should I be studying in college?
It is recommended that you spend at least 1 hour on studying for every hour spent in class. This means you should be spending at least 24 hours per week on academic coursework.
What is a syllabus?
Professors expect students to read, save and consult the course syllabus. The syllabus spells out exactly what is expected of the student, when it is due, and how it will be graded.
