I'm Ready to Retire, Now What?

Preparing for Retirement

Retirement is a very important life event, and it is vital that you take time to plan. Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) and the State Teacher’s Retirement System (STRS) offer various pre-retirement services including counseling and seminars to assist you with this process.  You may also contact the Kent State University Benefits Office at 330-672-3107 for these services, or use the member web site for your respective retirement system where you can run estimates and obtain other useful information.

It is recommended that you start this process at least 90 days prior to your intended retirement date.

Counseling

Counselors are available weekdays during business hours at the OPERS and STRS offices to provide you with information about your retirement options. They will assist you in completing the various forms and applications needed to apply for benefits or to update your records. You may speak to OPERS counselors on the phone, request an interview by phone or in person.  You may also contact the Benefits Office at 330-672-3107 to schedule an appointment. To schedule counseling, members can reach OPERS at 1-800-222-PERS (7377).  STRS members may visit the STRS Ohio Web site at www.strsoh.org or call toll-free 1-888-227-7877.  Off-site interviews are also available throughout the state for both OPERS and STRS members, and are posted on their web site.
