2011 20 Year Club Inductees

Carla Baker

Carla R. Barker

Administrative Secretary, Kent State University at Tuscarawas
Start Date: Aug. 22, 1990

Changes observed on campus over the past 20 years:
The campus has grown not only in enrollment, but also in community support and contributions. The leadership of Dean Andrews has made a major impact with his vision for the Tuscarawas campus.

Likes best about working at Kent State: I feel very fortunate for the opportunities Kent State Tuscarawas has given me since I started as a student and through the last 20 years. I owe a high school teacher the credit for encouraging me to apply for a scholarship at Tuscarawas, which was the start of my education and my career.
Barb Bauer

Barbara A. Bauer

Administrative Assistant, Modern & Classical Languages
Start Date: July 30, 1990

Likes best about working at Kent State: I like the interaction with all of the students, but I thoroughly enjoy working with the graduate students. I also like the beautiful campus, which, despite its close proximity to Cleveland and Akron, still feels partly like a small, rural town.

Hobbies and community activities: I help facilitate a book club at the Mogadore library, and I enjoy reading and writing. I’m currently writing about my father’s life and like to attend writing workshops when possible.
Victoria Bocchicchio

Victoria A. Bocchicchio

Senior Special Assistant, Honors College
Start Date: Sept. 24, 1990

Likes best about working at Kent State: The students and the beautiful and well-maintained grounds.

Best Kent State memory or professinal accomplishment:
Participating in this year’s Institute for Excellence leadership program.

Kent State activities and organizations: KASADA (Kent Academic Support and Advising Association), Phi Beta Delta (Honors Society for International Scholars) and the Women’s Center Advisory Board.
Chris Buttenschon

Christopher F. Buttenschon

Senior Assistant Director, Admissions
Start Date: Sept. 4, 1990

Changes observed on campus over the past 20 years: It’s hard to believe, but when I first started no admissions counselor had a computer or even a typewriter! Our phone system was terribly antiquated – we had 1960-style push-button phones. To get an outside line, you had to push three buttons and hope for a dial tone. I also love the way the esplanade has connected the campus to the rest of the community.

Likes best about working at Kent State: I enjoy visiting high schools and talking to large groups of prospective students. It makes me feel even better when I see them on campus as Kent State students. I have been recognized by students who don’t always remember my name, but refer to me as “that Kent State guy.” I love “being” Kent State.

Betty Crabtree

Betty M. Crabtree

Bookstore Manager, Kent State University at East Liverpool  and Salem
Start Date: Aug. 13, 1990

Changes observed on campus over the past 20 years:
Our enrollment has increased, and we have more traditional students. We also offer more bachelor’s degrees now than when I started.

Likes best about working at Kent State: I like the idea of helping people reach their potential.

Hobbies:  Reading and playing with my four grandchildren.
John E. Dixon

Painter, Campus Environment and Operations
Start Date: Jan. 7, 1991

Changes observed on campus over the past 20 years:
Three big changes are the nice outdoor artwork, less grass and more parking and students looking at their phones instead of interacting.

Best Kent State memory: Playing in the Campus Environment and Operations rock band.  We play every year at the CE&O summer picnic and the holiday party.

Debra Edminson

Debra L. Edminson

Bookstore Manager, Kent State University at Stark
Start Date: Oct. 29, 1990

Best Kent State memory: The Stark Campus bookstore has employed many students over the past 20 years. My fondest memories are of working with and watching them accomplish their goals, graduate from Stark and move into the workforce. Many of them stop back into the store to say hello and reminisce about changes in their lives and the campus that was their home for several years.

Likes best about working at Kent State:
The campus community is ever-changing; each new semester brings with it the chance to interact with new faculty and students. Knowing that my position on campus helps students be successful is rewarding.
Sharon Elmert

Sharon C. Elmert

Senior Secretary, Residence Services
Start Date: Feb. 11, 1991

Work History: I was originally hired in the Financial Aid office; eight years later I moved to Residence Services in Korb Hall and Twin Towers. Now I work as a senior secretary to the associate director in Residence Services.

Kent State activities and organizations: I have served on the Homecoming Committee that helps select the king and queen.

Hobbies:
Spending time with my six grandchildren.

James J. Francl

Best Kent State memory: Being part of a team that received a patent for creating a method of forming liquid crystal display cell walls using a patterned electric field.

Likes best about Kent State:  The people.

Kent State activities and organizations: The 5 O’clock Summit Street Traffic Club.
Floyd Grammer

Floyd R. Grammer

Cook, University Dining Services
Start Date: Nov. 5, 1990

Changes observed on campus over the past 20 years: I’ve seen the university grow from the perspective of a state and national university to that of an international university.

Likes best about working at Kent State:
I like working with students from all over the world and from many different cultures. It’s the next best thing to visiting the country in person.
Felicia Hazen

Felicia G. Hazen

Library Associate, University Libraries
Start Date: July 23, 1990

Description of current position: I worked in the Bindery department for 19 years and in 2010 was promoted to my current position, where I am responsible for acquisitions and maintaining access to the University Libraries serials and electronic resources. I have enjoyed my new job, and working with great people in the library.

Hobbies: I like spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren. I also enjoy traveling, skiing and interior decorating for family and friends.
Peggy Kline

Peggy J. Kline

Administrative Clerk, University Registrar's Office
Start Date: July 9, 1990

Changes observed on campus over the past 20 years: I have observed a much greater reliance on technology and online services for decision-making, day-to-day transactions and student services. In the Registrar’s Office, this has allowed students to monitor their own academic records, to request transcripts and to register online without having to stand in line.

Likes best about working at Kent State: I enjoy the ever-changing faces of our students and staff and the picturesque grounds of the Kent campus throughout the year. I also appreciate the great benefits.
