Joseph S. Vitale, Jr.
Interim Vice President for Human Resources
Appointed as Interim Vice President for the Division of Human Resources in 2013, Joseph S. Vitale, Jr. is responsible for leading the Division of Human Resources in its mission of attracting, retaining, and developing a community of talented and diverse individuals in support of the university’s Excellence Agenda. The division works to attain the university diversity and inclusion agenda by working with hiring authorities to recruit and retain talented and diverse faculty and staff and create a welcoming, affirming, and empowering culture of respect and inclusion. The division promotes leading practices in developing and recognizing outstanding faculty and staff, as well as enhancing communications to employees at all campuses. The division further strives to serve as consultant, partner, and advisor to all departments on a wide range of compliance and non-compliance issues; facilitates professional development of employees; and promotes effective employee communication in the university community.
Currently, the division is focused on growing a robust university-wide wellness program to support the work and personal lives of faculty and staff in their efforts to be productive members of a vibrant university community.
The division is comprised of the departments of Benefits, Communications, Compensation, Employee/Labor Relations, Equal Opportunity & Affirmative Action, HR Outreach & Initiatives, Records, Talent Acquisition and Training & Development.
Vitale joined the Kent State University Human Resources division in 2005 and holds over 20 years of human resources experience. He has worked in the past as a Deputy Finance Director for U.S. Senator John Glenn and elected as a Council Pro Tempore for the City of Olmsted Falls. In 2013, he was a finalist for Cleveland Crain’s Business’ HR Leaders Award for the “2013 HR Executive of the Year” (http://www.crainscleveland.com/section/HR13).
