Off-Campus Remote Desktop Protocols (RDP)
Changes To Off Campus Access for Remote Desktop Protocols
In an effort to strengthen the security of Kent State's network and our individual workstations, the Division of Information Services is instituting a change to the way users can gain remote access to their desktop computers.Beginning Tuesday, July 7, 2009 anyone using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Apple Remote Desktop (ARD), or Virtual Network Computing (VNC) to access his or her workstation from off campus will need to do so through the university's Virtual Private Network (KSU-VPN). Please note that this change does not limit remote access to your desktop but rather makes it more secure. You can begin utilizing the VPN immediately for this purpose.
Use of the VPN requires a simple, one-time installation. Complete instructions, as well as versions of the VPN for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems, are available for download on the IS Web site at http://www.kent.edu/is/helpdesk/remoteaccess/index.cfm. Linux and Solaris users should contact the Kent State University Helpdesk at 330-672-HELP (4357) or http://support.kent.edu for options.
By routing remote access through the KSU-VPN, we will significantly reduce the exposed vulnerability of network traffic. If you have questions or need help installing the VPN, please contact the Helpdesk.
Thanks,
Brendan Walsh
