Revive, Reboot, Reuse: Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions for Revive, Reboot, Reuse
To whom will donated computers be given?
Donated computers will be given to local charities in Portage County, such as Safer Future, Freedom House, Miller House, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. If you prefer a different local charity, you may specify it on the donation form.
Why can you not accept desktops or CRT monitors?
Due to physical space restrictions we cannot accept desktop computers. CRT monitors contain hazardous materials and should be disposed of according to EPA standards.
How can I get a tax write off for this donation?
Tax write off receipts will be distributed by the particular charity that your hardware is donated to. Receipts will be mailed from these organizations if your hardware is deemed USABLE. Your receipt amount will be determined by the "as-is" value of the usable hardware.
What will happen with the data on my computer?
All data on the hardware in your donated computer will be permanently erased using a "zero-out" erase procedure. This process writes "0s and 1s" over the entire drive, making an existing information unreadable. A new operating system will be installed on the drive following this procedure.
What software will be installed on the donated computer?
The Ubuntu Linux operating system, available as an open source license, will be installed on each computer. In addition, other open-source programs providing basic functionality will be installed such as OpenOffice.org and the Firefox browser.
When will the computers be donated to the charities?
Time will be needed to refurbish the computers and get them into working order. The Tech Spot will likely begin sending them to charities starting in June.
Can I send in a computer donation through the mail?
Unfortunately we are unable to accept mail-in requests at this time.
May I donate a computer that I do not personally own (such as from my office)?
No, we can only accept personally-owned laptops.
