International Student Orientation

Spring 2014 International Student Orientation

The Program Start Date for all new international students is Wednesday, January 8. On that day:

8:00 AM - 5:00 PM: Students come to the Office of Global Education (with your I-20 and passport) and complete our Personal Data Form. Your immigration documents will be scanned.

International Student Orientation will take place on Thursday, January 9 in the Kent State Student Center Ballroom. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.


8:00 AM – 9:00 AM:Students check in for Orientation at the registration desks outside the Kent Student Center Ballroom and receive their name badge lanyards and backpacks. Breakfast is served in the Ballroom (bagels, muffins, eggs, sausage, bacon [clearly labeled], toast, fruit, coffee, tea, water, orange juice).

9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Office of Global Education staff members take the stage to welcome the new students and introduce themselves briefly. Associate Provost Marcello Fantoni delivers a welcome message. ISSS explains the day’s schedule.

9:30 AM – 10:30 AM: ISSS staff present on immigration regulations and academic ethics in the United States.

10:30 AM – 10:45 AM: Restroom break.

10:45 AM – 11:15 AM:Dr. Jayita Datta presents on culture shock and adjustment, as well as providing a brief overview of psychological services.

11:15 AM – 11:30 AM: A representative from the KSU Police present on safety, with an emphasis on traffic law in the U.S.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Students break into groups for Group Discussion, led by an OGE staff member. The Leader reviews information presented during the morning session, addresses cultural adjustment and provides students with an overview of American culture, as well as covering practical inquiries such as where to purchase a cell phone.

3:00 PM – 5:00 PM: The International Student Resource Fair in the Ballroom affords the students the opportunity to meet with representatives from offices and departments across campus, as well as meet ISSS advisors one-on-one.

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Bowling and Games Night in Eastway.


1:00 PM - 3:00 PM : Open skate at the Kent Ice Arena.
