Barbara Hipsman Springer

Emeritus Associate Professor

Barb HIpsman (Springer) taught in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication for 26 years before her retirement in June, 2013. A professional journalist covering the statehouse and other national and international news, Hipsman taught public affairs reporting, beat reporting and ethics to sophomores, juniors and seniors. She looked forward to freshmen classes as she made countless recruiting calls to potential JMC students, inaugurating what has become a tradition of faculty calling out to "smart" students they'd like to teach. Barb has been married for more than 30 years to Bob Springer, a former Akron Beacon Journal reporter and editor, who serves JMC as an academic adviser. They have two daughters, Kyla and husband, Andrew Yeoman, live in Portland. Anna lives in Detroit. Both are happy that they have been "replaced" at least part time by the JMC mascot, Cocoa, a mix terrier who loves students who feed her.
