Student Experience | Kent State University

Student Experience

College is a time for exploring new ideas, developing new skills, finding new passions and forming lifelong bonds.

At JMC, our top Ohio school for journalism and communication, students receive expert navigation on their path of discovery. At the start of their first year, students are assigned professional academic advisors who stay with them throughout their college careers. Our advisors are devoted to helping students map out the curriculum and experiential options best suited to their professional aspirations.

JMC faculty also provide industry-specific expertise, education and coaching. Our faculty care about students as individuals and are committed to their success.

Beyond the classroom, JMC students can be involved in a wide array of activities including:

  • Nationally recognized student media along with regional, national and international student competitions, and student organizations

  • Short- and long-term study abroad experiences

  • A professional coordinator of career services to provide support in pursuing internships across the country

  • CareerExpo, an annual off-campus career fair focused exclusively focused on media, communication, advertising, and public relations majors - the only career event of its kind at Kent State

  • Industry-specific networking events

  • Professional mentors from news, media and marketing organizations across the country, including our alumni and members of JMCs Professional Advisory Board

  • Diversity Speaker Series, a lecture series exposing students to successful minority media and communication professionals

  • Student Success Week, an annual weeklong celebration of all JMC students, including activities ranging from free pizza day to an annual scholarship and awards dinner.

  • CCI Commons, a living and learning community for communication and design majors

  • Flash Communications, a student-run PR agency housed in University Communication and Marketing and jointly operated by the JMC, provides PR, journalism and communications students with hands-on experience working in a real-world setting

  • IdeaBase, (formerly The Tannery) an integrated marketing communications firm powered by Kent State students, gives students hands-on experience working with paying clients on real projects.
