Journey to the Final Four: Keeping Up With the MAC Champion Golden Flashes

The 14th-seeded Kent State University men’s basketball team played third-seeded UCLA close in the second half, but ultimately fell to the Bruins, 97-80, March 17 in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament Midwest Region at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.

Fifteen years after Kent State’s Men’s Basketball team became the darlings of the NCAA Tournament, those who played and cheered for that team are remembering the excitement.

The Golden Flashes won the Mid-American Conference Tournament and entered March Madness as a #10 seed; most expected they would lose their first game and certainly wouldn’t advance far.

Excitement is building as the Kent State University men's basketball team gets ready to take on UCLA tonight in the first round of the NCAA tournament’s South Regional.

Last night kicked off with a press conference and open practice at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. Players also met with fans as the Golden Flashes continued to prepare for their first NCAA men’s basketball tournament in nine years.

The players thought they were just coming to a typical morning meal.  Turns out, it was a lot more like Christmas morning.

Under Armour, the official athletics apparel partner of Kent State University Athletics, surprised the men’s basketball team Thursday with new shoes, shirts, and other items, including backpacks styled for Golden State Warrior and NBA Most Valuable Player Steph Curry.

While coaches knew what was planned for breakfast, the players had no idea.  Most were all smiles trying on the gear and filling up their backpacks.

California Dreaming!  The Kent State Men’s Basketball team arrived in Sacramento Wednesday motivated for its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament appearance in nine years.

The Golden Flashes had a short sendoff at the Kent Campus before busing to the Akron-Canton Airport for the four-hour flight.  Mother Nature delayed the flight for a few hours, but the team arrived in California mid-afternoon, and after a short stop at their hotel, team members were off to a local high school gymnasium for practice.

If you are planning to attend the first round of the NCAA tournament’s South Regional, prepare to go the distance – literally. There are 2,397 miles between Kent State University and Sacramento, California where No. 14 Kent State University takes on No. 3 UCLA Friday night.

Messages of congratulations and displays of Kent State University pride flooded social media as the Kent State men’s basketball team captured the 2017 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Championship title.
