Choose Ohio First Scholarship
Choose Ohio First Scholarship
Deadline: June 6th, 2008 (for the 2008/2009 academic year)(NEW DEADLINE!)
About the Program:
Choose Ohio First Scholarships will annually provide about 20 undergraduate tuition scholarships, varying in size between $1,500 and $4,700 a year, to promising incoming STEM freshmen who intend to pursue at least a minor in mathematics. The scholarships were made possible by a grant from Ohio Board of Regents awarded to the consortium of six partnering institutions - Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College, Kent State University, University of Akron, and Youngstown University.
The scholarships will be awarded to students who are financially disadvantaged thereby enabling them to pursue a full-time program of studies that can be completed in four years. The scholarship is renewable each year and available from academic year 2007/08 through 2010/11.
Eligibility:
Student applying for this scholarship must intend to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, chemistry, geology, physics, mathematics, biology, medicine, integrated math, integrated science, or integrated life sciences at Kent State University.
Students must also meet the Federal eligibility guidelines and requirements to receive financial aid and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident residing in Ohio. Some preference will be given to local students.
To be eligible for the award the applicant has to be ready to take a calculus sequence. The readiness can be achieved in two ways. Students whose math ACT score is 27 or above (math SAT score 620 or above) are considered to be ready for calculus. Local students whose math ACT score is at least 22 (math SAT score 530) but lower than 27 (math SAT score 620) can enroll in a pre-Calculus course (5 credit hours) and an orientation course (1 credit hour) in Summer 2008. Their summer tuition will be covered by the scholarship. Based on the course grade, a decision will be made if the student will continue on the scholarship.
