Entrance Requirements, Enrollment and Admission

To obtain a B.S. in Translation, undergraduate students must apply at Kent State University www.admissions.kent.edu/  and fulfill the requirements for the B.S.

To be considered for acceptance in the Master's Program in translation, the student must complete an application for graduate admission (forms for domestic students are available at http://www.admissions.kent.edu/apply/Graduate and for international students at http://www.admissions.kent.edu/apply/International/Graduate/); and fulfill the entrance requirements in the Master’s Program in Translation. It is suggested that the application file be completed by February 1st, especially if the applicant wants to be considered for a graduate assistantship.

For domestic students, all materials should be sent to:  Kent State University, Attn:  Research and Graduate Studies, Graduate Admissions, PO Box 5190, Kent, OH   44242.

For international students, all materials should be sent to:  Kent State University, Attn:  International Admissions, PO Box 5190, Kent, OH  44242 .
In addition to submitting the application materials, official transcripts, and application fee required by university admission procedures, departmental requirements include: 

  • A 3.0 or higher grade point average in all undergraduate work or graduate work
  • If the candidate is an international student, TOEFL scores of at least 525 (Written test) or 197 (Computerized test) or 71 (internet based) or another certification of English proficiency acceptable to the university such as a Band of 5. 5 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • A 3-5 minute oral statement of purpose (tape/CD/audio-file) in the student’s second language. International students should submit two oral statements: one in English and the one in the language for which they are applying.
  • A writing sample of at least 300 words in the second language chosen by the applicant. The essay should describe the student's experience in the second language. International students should submit two writing samples: one in English and one in the second language for which they are applying. The writing sample and tape should be accompanied by a signed declaration that they are the student's original work and that the student has received no help in their preparation. (The use of dictionaries and other reference work is permitted.)
  • Three letters of recommendation

To be considered for acceptance in the Doctoral Program in translation, the student must complete an application for graduate admission; forms are available at (forms for domestic students are available at http://www.admissions.kent.edu/apply/Graduate and for international students at http://www.admissions.kent.edu/apply/International/Graduate/) and fulfill the entrance requirements in the Doctoral Program in Translation. It is strongly suggested that files be completed by February 1st of each year.
Applications for admission to the Doctoral Program are accepted from students who have completed the M.A. in Translation, an M.A. in a Foreign Language, a Master's of Business Administration or a Master's in any other discipline with prior experience or training in languages or linguistics. Limitations of staff and space require that admission be restricted to the most promising applicants.

In addition to submitting the regular application materials, official transcripts, and application fee required by university admission procedures, departmental requirements include:

  • A 3.0 or higher grade point average in all undergraduate work and a score of 3.5 or higher in graduate work
  • A score of 600 or better on the TOEFL examination or a Band of 7 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • Three favorable recommendations from former professors or former employers and professional colleagues (for students with prior work experience)
  • A statement of goals and motivations for pursuing a career in translation studies
  • A sample (7-10 pages) from a research essay dealing with any aspect of translation or language; or a prospectus for a language informatics or translation studies project
  • Applicants to the translation studies specialization must present proof of a graduate degree from a professional translation program, or proof of translation ability including one or more of the following: a translation portfolio, official or certifiable record of professional work experience, or professional accreditation credential.
  • The Ph.D. program is normally open only to qualified individuals who can enroll as full-time students. Students meeting all other requirements for entry into the doctoral program may be permitted to enroll on a part-time basis as long as registration is limited to formal courses and seminars. Registration for "Research" and "Dissertation" is permitted only of full-time doctoral candidates.
