Kent State’s Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies Awarded $400,000 in Grants
Kent State University professors Brian Baer, Ph.D., and Theresa Minick, from the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies, have been awarded nearly $400,000 in grants to fund the 2013 Foreign Language Student Academy and the Teacher Leadership Academy at the university.

MCLS Professors Awarded Federal Grants to fund 2013 Foreign Language Student Academy and Teacher Leadership Academy
Profs. Brian Baer and Theresa Minick have been awarded close to $400,000 in grants from the federal government STARTALK program to fund the 2013 Foreign Language Student Academy and the Teacher Leadership Academy, focusing on Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.

Fetna Mikati, a Kent State professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, believes in enriched discussions and using unconventional teaching tools to reach the goals set for her students. That is one of the reasons she was nominated and honored with an Outstanding Teaching Award.

Kent State’s Institute for Applied Linguistics Hosts Leading Translation Studies Scholar, Nov. 30
Kent State University’s Institute for Applied Linguistics will host Anthony Pym, a leading translation studies scholar, during the third annual Gregory M. Shreve Lecture Series. Pym will speak about radical asymmetry in cross-cultural communication on Friday, Nov. 30, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 112-A in Satterfield Hall.

Fetna Mikati nominated for Outstanding Teaching Award
Every year, the University Teaching Council recognizes Kent State’s outstanding full-time, nontenure-track and part-time faculty by awarding three educators with the Outstanding Teaching Awards. Arabic instructor Fetna Mikati is among this year's nominees.

Kent State Translator Receives Funds to Spotlight Spanish Works
Dr. Kelly Washbourne, associate professor of Spanish translation in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Kent State University, looks to language as a challenge. His curiosity about other cultures and languages has earned him a $25,000 Translation Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Kent State University’s Foreign Language Academy received a combined total of $197,795 in federal grants for 2010. The Foreign Language Academy and its workshops focus on enriching high school students’ and teachers’ capabilities of learning and grasping world languages that are not widely taught in the United States.

Online Language Learning Videos Feature Two Kent State Professors
Two Kent State University instructors from its Foreign Language Academy were among 10 world language professors chosen by the National Foreign Language Center to be featured in its STARTALK’s online language learning modules. STARTALK is a program of the National Foreign Language Center and helps support the teaching of foreign languages in American schools.
