• Kent State’s Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies Awarded $400,000 in Grants Kent State University professors Brian Baer, Ph.D., and Theresa Minick, from the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies, have been awarded nearly $400,000 in grants to fund the 2013 Foreign Language Student Academy and the Teacher Leadership Academy at the university.

• Kent State Presents Spanish and Latin Film Series, March 1-16 During the month of March, Kent State University will present five Spanish and Latin films. The films will be shown in the Schwartz Center auditorium (room 177).

• MCLS Professors Awarded Federal Grants to fund 2013 Foreign Language Student Academy and Teacher Leadership Academy Profs. Brian Baer and Theresa Minick have been awarded close to $400,000 in grants from the federal government STARTALK program to fund the 2013 Foreign Language Student Academy and the Teacher Leadership Academy, focusing on Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.
  
• Kent State Professor Earns Outstanding Teaching Award for Unconventional Teaching Methods Fetna Mikati, a Kent State professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, believes in enriched discussions and using unconventional teaching tools to reach the goals set for her students. That is one of the reasons she was nominated and honored with an Outstanding Teaching Award.
  
• German Film Series The Departments of History, Political Science, and MCLS present a GERMAN FILM SERIES. Please join us on Wednesday nights at 7pm, in Bowman 220 for a showing of some of the best offerings in German film today.
  
• Kent State’s Institute for Applied Linguistics Hosts Leading Translation Studies Scholar, Nov. 30 Kent State University’s Institute for Applied Linguistics will host Anthony Pym, a leading translation studies scholar, during the third annual Gregory M. Shreve Lecture Series. Pym will speak about radical asymmetry in cross-cultural communication on Friday, Nov. 30, at 3:30 p.m. in Room 112-A in Satterfield Hall.
  
• Fetna Mikati nominated for Outstanding Teaching Award Every year, the University Teaching Council recognizes Kent State’s outstanding full-time, nontenure-track and part-time faculty by awarding three educators with the Outstanding Teaching Awards. Arabic instructor Fetna Mikati is among this year's nominees.
  
• Drs. Carduner & Chism nominated for Distinguished Teaching Award The Kent State Alumni Association has announced the nominees for the 2012 Distinguished Teaching Award. MCLS professors Dr. Jessie Carduner and Dr. Rebecca Chism have been nominated.

• KSU Foreign Language Academies Receive 2012 Funding from NSA Dr. Brian Baer and Prof. Theresa Minick awarded grant for 2012 KSU Startalk Foreign Language Academies in Russian, Arabic and Chinese.
  
• Kent State Presents Spanish Film Series, March 2-3 Kent State University will present a series of three recent Spanish films on March 2-3. The films will be shown in the auditorium in the Schwartz Center (room 177) and will be in Spanish with English subtitles.

• Today’s Students Help Publish an Ancient Greek Work Kent State University students will soon have the chance to analyze and decipher an original Greek papyrus from antiquity, as part of a research project through the Green Scholars Initiative.
  
• Kent State Presents Documentary on World’s Largest Deaf Community on April 7 On April 7, Kent State University will host a screening of the documentary film “Voices From El-Sayed,†which tells the story of world’s largest Deaf community located in an Israeli Bedoiun village. Director and writer Oded Adomi Leshem will be on hand to discuss the film.

• Kent State Translator Receives Funds to Spotlight Spanish Works Dr. Kelly Washbourne, associate professor of Spanish translation in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Kent State University, looks to language as a challenge. His curiosity about other cultures and languages has earned him a $25,000 Translation Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
  
• Eugen Wüster Prize 2010 Awarded to Sue Ellen Wright Sue Ellen Wright, professor of translation studies was awarded the Eugen Wüster Prize 2010 by Infoterm for her contributions to terminology studies.
  
• IAL Student and Faculty Member Awarded NEA fellowships Spanish Translation Professor Kelly Washbourne awarded NEA fellowship for translation of "Legends of Guatamala," and Russian translation graduate student Deborah Hoffman awarded NEA fellowship for translation of the prison memoirs of Efrosiniia Kersnovskaia.
  
• Margaret Haas is finalist for Outstanding Teaching Award Margaret (Peg) Haas, Lecturer in Spanish, has been chosen as a finalist for the 2010 Outstanding Teaching Awards sponsored by the University Teaching Council.
  
• Daniel Castaneda Awarded Distinguished Teaching Award Daniel Castaneda, Spanish faculty member, is recognized at KSU-Stark with the Distinguished Teaching award
  
• Hermosilla, Advising System earn Certificate of Merit Dr. Hermosilla, MCLS Advising System earn 2010 NACADA Advising Technology Innovation Certificate of Merit.
  
• Kent State’s Foreign Language Academy Expands Program Kent State University’s Foreign Language Academy received a combined total of $197,795 in federal grants for 2010. The Foreign Language Academy and its workshops focus on enriching high school students’ and teachers’ capabilities of learning and grasping world languages that are not widely taught in the United States.
  
• Pesarchick recognized by SAS Professor Laurie Pesarchik has been nominated by a student with a disability for outstanding service in going above and beyond her stated responsibilities in accommodating a student or students with disabilities in their classroom.
  
• Online Language Learning Videos Feature Two Kent State Professors Two Kent State University instructors from its Foreign Language Academy were among 10 world language professors chosen by the National Foreign Language Center to be featured in its STARTALK’s online language learning modules. STARTALK is a program of the National Foreign Language Center and helps support the teaching of foreign languages in American schools.
  
• MCLS Arabic & Hindi Instructors in STARTALK Video MCLS Foreign Language Academy instructors Fetna Mikati (Arabic) and Uma Krishnan (Hindi) were among ten world language teachers selected by the National Foreign Language Center to be featured in videos demonstrating best practices in the teaching of critical-needs languages.
  
• Carol Maier Receives Distinguished Scholar Award Professor Carol Maier of the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies received the 2009 Distinguished Scholar Award for her work in translation studies.
