New Nursing Simulation Laboratory Provides Realistic Training Ground for Students (4/17/08)
Kent State University’s College of Nursing will hold the grand opening and dedication of the Olga A. Mural Simulation Laboratory, a cutting-edge patient care complex designed to emulate the conditions and situations nurses encounter in realistic settings, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, in Henderson Hall on the Kent campus.
The grand opening will include remarks from Kent State President Lester A. Lefton, Dr. Laura Dzurec, dean of the College of Nursing and valued guests.
The nursing simulation laboratory is a $250,000 investment. The lead gift for the project came from Olga A. Mural through the University Foundation to the College of Nursing.
The new laboratory complex includes three patient care pods outfitted with a high-fidelity manikin, interactive adult and baby manikins, and a virtual intravenous simulator for the practice of skills and critical thinking in realistic clinical situations. Small group observation of patient care is incorporated through a large two-way mirror between the patient care complex and the viewing seminar room.
Dr. Nancy Aho, coordinator of the Olga A Mural Nursing Simulation Laboratory, states that patient conditions and responses to illness and treatment can be simulated to challenge the learner to practice and improve care delivery in a ‘safe’ environment.
“The laboratory and innovative technology provides a new dimension to engage students, university colleagues and health care associates in learning and advancement through collaborative education, research and development,” says Aho.
