Annual Cowperthwaite Lecture at Kent State’s Communication School Spells Out “The Three Rules of Life” (5/16/08)

The School of Communication Studies will present the annual Cowperthwaite Lecture on Sunday, May 18. The talk will be presented by Dr. Dan Canary of Arizona State University, who is an expert in relational and conflict communication.

Canary is a Professor in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University.  He has authored or co-authored 10 books and more than 70 articles and scholarly book chapters.  Canary’s research interests include relational maintenance behaviors, conflict communication, conversational argument, and sex differences and similarities in communication.   He has previously taught at Penn State University, Ohio University, Cal State Fullerton and Florida Tech.

The annual lecture honors the work and life of the late Dr. L. LeRoy Cowperthwaite who was director of what was at the time known as the Kent State School of Speech, from 1954 to 1983.  The Cowperthwaite Lecture series was created in 1984, after its namesake’s retirement, to honor his service, leadership and dedication to the School of Speech and the College of Fine and Professional Arts.  Each year a renowned communication scholar is invited to campus to present the Cowperthwaite Lecture and teach a graduate seminar in his/her area of expertise.
