Kent State Sends Third Group of Volunteers to Gulf Coast During Spring Break
A third group of more than 135 Kent State students, faculty and staff will spend their spring break, March 24-31, in the Mississippi Gulf Coast to continue Hurricane Katrina relief efforts begun in 2006.
Volunteers will be staying at multiple camps in Biloxi and Gulf Port, Miss. They will be working in the surrounding communities doing home reconstruction projects, such as painting, hanging drywall and roofing.
Previous Kent State efforts to help the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast region include:
-Nearly $6,000 in donations to the American Red Cross raised from the university community in 2005;
-Truckload of relief supplies donated soon after the hurricane hit;
-Partnership with Dillard University to help students who attended colleges in the hurricane-affected areas continue their education at Kent State;
-Inaugural trip of more than 400 volunteers organized by the Kent State United for the Gulf Coast committee for the university’s 2006 spring break -- more than 60 projects were completed in the cities of Pass Christian and Biloxi, Miss., as a result;
-2006 holiday gift project provided 250 children with gifts, including more than 40 bicycles, from donors across the nation; and
-Nearly 50 volunteers traveled to the Gulf Coast after News Years in January 2007.
Students who were unable to go on the trips were given the opportunity this spring to help with fundraising efforts for future relief projects. More than 130 community members, Kent State faculty, staff and students attended the Project Playhouse Silent Auction March 17 to raise funds for future efforts in Biloxi.
