Kent State Honors Leadership in Diversity, April 21

Two professors and two northeast Ohio business leaders will be honored for their efforts to enhance and promote diversity on the Kent State campuses and in the community at the annual Celebration of Diversity and Awards Program, 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 21, in the Kent Student Center Ballroom.

The Diversity Leadership Awards are designed to reward superior performance demonstrated by personal efforts, unique contributions and initiatives above-and-beyond expectations toward institutional diversity-related goals.

Dr. Molly Merryman and Dr. Kenneth Bindas, Trumbull Campus professors from criminal justice studies and history, respectively, will be presented with the Diversity Leadership Awards for Teaching/Research for their work on Invisible Struggles: Stories of Northern Segregation, which aired recently on PBS 45 and 49. The professors empowered their students to develop the film, which depicted the African-American community’s struggles in Trumbull County during the civil rights era.

The President’s Social Responsibility Award, which acknowledges an individual or organization outside of the university, goes to Lonzo Coleman, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Coleman Spohn Corporation, and Bob Lanier, CEO and publisher of Black Pages of Ohio. Coleman is an active member of the Cleveland community, participating in the construction of various Cleveland landmarks, such as The Quicken Loans Arena, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Myers University. Lanier’s Black Pages of Ohio serve as a directory of African-American-owned businesses. Black Pages of Ohio also provides scholarships for inner-city youth.
