The Deciding Factor: U.S. Supreme Court Plays Giant Hand in Civil Rights (1/4/07)
As many wait for a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court on two cases involving racial balancing in public schools, it is ever more apparent the effect a court’s decision can have on civil rights.
With the appointments of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, the big question is: How will the U.S. Supreme Court interpret the constitution regarding controversies about gay rights, abortion politics and religious freedom cases?
“The court is poised to become even more politically conservative and potentially affirm majoritarian preferences,” says Christopher Banks, co-author of Courts and Judicial Policymaking, an attorney and Kent State associate professor of political science.
Banks is available to discuss topics related to Constitutional law, law and courts, religious freedom, and civil rights and liberties. He can be reached at 330-672-0908 or cbanks6@kent.edu.
