Student Named “Woman to Watch” for Leadership, Commitment to Social Issues (2/21/07)

Kent State University student Kristin Tassone is the recipient of the Akron Women’s History Project’s Woman to Watch award for 2007. Tassone was nominated for the award by the Kent State Women’s Resource Center in recognition of her student leadership and dedication to supporting issues of interest to women.

Tassone was chosen based on her passion and interest in advocating for women at Kent State, in the community and globally.  As a freshman, Tassone was the first producer and director of The Vagina Monologues held at the university. In its first three years, the production raised almost $10,000 for local battered women’s shelters and crisis support services in the area, in addition to funding forwarded to the V-Day global campaign supporting women around the world.

Tassone is the founder of a successful student feminist organization. She also serves a treasurer of the Honors College Mortar Board, Laurels Chapter, as recruitment chair for Phi Gamma Pi sorority, and works as a residence hall assistant.

Tassone is the first woman to complete the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Studies minor at Kent State.  Tassone is currently completing her major in theatre and a second minor in political science. In Spring 2008, she will study in Washington, D.C.  in the Washington Program in National Issues.

Tassone’s hometown is Chambersburg, Penn.

For over 20 years, the Women’s History Project of the Akron Area (WHP) has celebrated the roles women have played in the history of the city, county and region by honoring many women from the greater Akron area who have worked to improve the quality of life for others. In all, 13 area women will be recognized on March 1, 2007, at the University of Akron Martin Center.
