Kent State Selects Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management (6/18/2009)
Kent State University Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Pete Goldsmith announced today the selection of T. David Garcia as the associate vice president for enrollment management. Garcia is currently the director of undergraduate admissions at Ohio University where he has served since 2005.  He will join Kent State on Aug. 1, 2009.

Kent State University Receives Grant for Breast Cancer Education (06/18/2009)
Kent State University has received a $76,110 grant from the Northeast Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This money will be used for breast cancer education, mammography screening, a survivor support group and walking group.

Kent State University Museum Features the French Fashion Magazine from 1912-1925 La Gazette du Bon Ton (06/16/2009)
Between 1912 and 1925, the Gazette du Bon Ton sought to be "the place where couturiers and painters collaborate to compose the silhouette of their time." It was the brain child of Lucien Vogel, a dynamic Frenchman who was fascinated by nineteenth century hand-colored engravings and set out to create a luxury modern magazine that would be the epitome of good taste.

Kent/Blossom Music Festival Announces 42nd Season (06/16/2009)
The 42nd annual Kent/Blossom Music festival is coming to Kent State University this summer. The 2009 season brings 40 young artists from 18 states and eight countries to the university campus. Participants are selected from more than 200 auditionees who, together with principal members of The Cleveland Orchestra and other major artists, engage in six weeks of intensive chamber music study and performance at the professional level.

Mindy Aleman, CFRE, APR, has been named the new executive director of the Kent State University Foundation's Center for Gift and Estate Planning. In this role, she will direct fundraising for the university involving planned gifts, which include contributions that provide life incomes for donors, as well as bequests.

Kent State’s School of Theatre and Dance proudly announces that alumni Alice Ripley, ’86, and John Moauro, ’07, are Tony Award winners. R
ipley won the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her role in the hit Broadway musical “Next to Normal.”

Kent State University Student Wins Spot on National Leadership Council (06/09/2009)
Stephanie Mehle, a freshman justice studies and political science double major at Kent State University, has been selected to serve as a member of the National Leadership Council (NLC) for the 2009-2010 academic year. The council is a leadership opportunity offered by The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honor society inviting freshmen and sophomores.

"Don’t Mention It” opens at the Downtown Gallery in Kent (06/05/2009)
The Downtown Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition “Don't Mention It” featuring artwork by Dana Depew, Liz Maugans and Joel Ross. The exhibition runs from June 10 to 27, 2009, with a reception on June 11, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Kent State president and top officers donate pay raises to provide student financial aid (06/04/2009)
Recognizing the financial pressures on today’s students, Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton and the 10 members of his Cabinet will donate any raises they may receive this year to contribute to a scholarship fund that will assist students who are having difficulty covering tuition in the face of a struggling Ohio and U.S. economy.

Kent State promotes Dr. Stanley T. Wearden to Dean, College of Communication and Information (06/04/2009)
Kent State University Senior Vice President and Provost Dr. Robert Frank announced today the selection of Dr. Stanley T. Wearden as dean of the College of Communication and Information. Wearden, who has nearly 20 years of service at Kent State University, is currently the director of Kent State’s School of Communication Studies. He will assume the duties of dean on July 1, 2009.

Enrollment and Student Affairs Vice President Goldsmith to leave Kent State (06/04/2009)
Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton announced today that Harold “Pete” Goldsmith, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs since 2003, has been named Dean of Students at Indiana University, effective Aug. 1, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees.

Kent State announces Ronald J. Fowler to serve as consultant to university (06/04/2009)
Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton announced today that the university will engage Dr. Ronald J. Fowler to consult and offer assistance on such projects as advancing the university’s relationships with the Akron and Cleveland public schools, improving the recruitment and retention of diverse background students, mentoring students, working with alumni and the Pan-African Faculty and Staff Association, as well as assisting with closing major gifts to the university.

Summary of Actions Taken By Board of Trustees at June 4 Meeting (06/04/2009)
Highlights include the following:

  • Established a Center for the Study of Information and Religion;
  • Established an International Institute for Human Service Workforce Research and Development;
  • Established a Combined Baccalaureate/Master’s Program in Gerontology and Nursing Home Administration;
  • Established an Undergraduate Degree in Public Health;

Kent State University Police Seek Assistance in Locating Suspect (06/03/2009)
Kent State University Police are looking for a male suspect who exposed himself to a female entering Rockwell Hall at the corner of Lincoln and Main streets on the Kent Campus. The incident occurred on May 26 at approximately 8 a.m.

Kent State Students Receive International Reporting Fellowships (6/02/2009)
Kent, Ohio – The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting awarded $2,000 International Reporting Student Fellowships to two students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University to travel internationally to report on topics that are often neglected by American media sources.

Kolbe Promoted to Associate Dean for Kent State’s College of Business Administration (06/01/2009)
Yank Heisler, dean of the Kent State University College of Business Administration, recently announced the hiring of Richard “Rick” Kolbe, Ph.D. as the associate dean for faculty. In his new role, Kolbe will be responsible for assisting Heisler in encouraging faculty research, supporting teaching excellence and shaping curriculum for the business school.

Kent State is earning national accolades for the successful implementation of its enterprise resource planning system. The university has been honored by CIO magazine as one of its CIO 100 award winners.

Kent State University School of Fashion Design and Merchandising Announces New Director (05/29/2009)
The Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising at Kent State University has named J.R. Campbell as its new director.  Campbell, will succeed Elizabeth Rhodes, who is retiring as director after 15 years of service. Campbell will join Kent State on July 1, 2009.

Kent State University Alumna Alice Ripley, ’86, Up for Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical (05/29/2009)
Kent State’s School of Theatre and Dance proudly announces alumna Alice Ripley ’86, currently starring in the hit Broadway musical Next to Normal,  is up for the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Next to Normal, currently playing at the Booth Theatre on Broadway, is up for a total of 11 nominations including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book, Best Leading Actor, Best Performance by a Featured Actress, Best Direction, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design.

Lean Six Sigma Still Seen as Critical Business Investment in Turbulent Times (5/27/09)

College of Nursing Faculty Member Receives Jeanette Wooding Service Award (05/26/2009)
Summit and Portage District of the Ohio Nurses Association recently named Mary D. Calabro, of Stow, Ohio, as the 2009 recipient of the Jeanette Wooding Service Award. Calabro is the director of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program at the Kent State University College of Nursing.

Minority Business Accelerator Receives National Recognition for Outreach and Collaborative Efforts (05/07/2009)
The Partnership for the Minority Business Accelerator (PMBA) recently achieved national recognition for its outreach and collaborative efforts. PMBA is a collaboration between the Akron Urban League, Kent State University and Akron SCORE and is funded by the GAR Foundation.

U.S. News and World Report ranks Kent State's School of Library and Information Science as a Best Graduate School (05/07/2009)
U.S. News and World Report named the School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University to its 2009 list of best graduate schools. The magazine analyzed more than 12,000 graduate programs before developing its coveted roster. Specialties were also rated by discipline including digital librarianship, archives and preservation and services for children and youth.

Ernst & Young’s John Relic Chosen as Kent State’s Accounting Alumnus of the Year (05/06/2009)
The Kent State University College of Business Administration recently honored John D. Relic with its Accounting Alumnus of the Year Award. The award is given to a Kent State alumnus whose career accomplishments and service to the university are determined to be among the best by the External Relations Committee of the Department of Accounting.

Kent State to Hold Spring 2009 Commencement Ceremonies, May 16 (05/05/2009)

Good things are hard to hide, and now even England knows about the excellence of Kent State University’s Executive Master of Business Administration Program (EMBA). London-based CEO magazine recently ranked the Kent State University College of Business Administration’s EMBA program in its Tier-One, the magazine’s highest ranking, for colleges in North America. There are just 25 Tier-One colleges in all of North America.

Kent State Nursing Faculty Members Awarded for Commitment to Patient Safety (04/29/2009)

Kent State University Holds Annual Symposium on Democracy, "Re-membering: Framing, Embracing, Revisiting History" (04/17/2009)
On May 4, 1970, Kent State University was thrust into the national spotlight when the Ohio National Guard’s gunfire killed four students and wounded nine others on campus. On May 4 and 5, 2009, Kent State University will convene its 10th Symposium on Democracy, founded to honor the memories of the four students who lost their lives on that day.

The Kent State University Museum will present "Tales of Hollywood's Golden Age" as told by veteran actress Ann Rutherford on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. Rutherford is well known for her part as Careen O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind," as Polly Benedict in the Andy Hardy film series and in numerous Westerns with the likes of John Wayne and Gene Autry.

Kent State Nursing Professor Honored by the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (04/08/2009)
The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) has presented its Leading the Way Award to Kent State University Assistant Professor Dr. Denice Sheehan and New York University Associate Professor Dr. Deborah Witt Sherman. The award recognizes nursing leaders who have been consistent in “leading the way” in hospice and palliative nursing, demonstrating a deep and abiding commitment to furthering the philosophy, mission and quality of palliative care.

Kent State University Chorale and Men’s and Women’s Choruses Perform in April at Cleveland’s Historic Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist (04/07/2009)
The Kent State University Chorale, conducted by Scott MacPherson, and the Kent State University Men's and Women's Choruses, conducted by Kerry Glann, will perform at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist at 1007 Superior Avenue in downtown Cleveland at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday,April 22, as part of the cathedral's Helen D. Schubert Concert Series.  The mostly-sacred program will feature each ensemble separately as well as combined into a massed choir. 

Wick Poetry Center’s 25th Anniversary Events (04/07/2009)
The Wick Poetry Center continues the celebration encouraging new voices with its culminating 25th anniversary events.  Starting April 23, at 7 p.m., the Wick Poetry Center will present the 8th annual Giving Voice Performance, featuring students, educators and seniors from area schools and communities performing original poetry and music, all to take place in the Kent State Student Center Ballroom.

College of the Arts Hosts Weeklong Calendar of Arts Events on Kent Campus (03/31/2009)
The College of the Arts, formerly known as the College of Fine and Professional Arts, is hosting its Spring for the Arts weeklong event, April 12 – 19. With more than 15 years of experience teaching Middle Eastern politics, Dr. Ayra Amirie offers an in-depth knowledge about the language and culture of one of the most critical parts of the world. Amirie will present a lecture titled, "A Personal Perspective on U.S.-Iranian Relations," at 7:30 p.m. on April 16 in the Kent Student Center Kiva.

Kent State’s Roe Green Visiting Director Series Brings Associate Artistic Director of Utah Shakespearean Festival to Direct Twelfth Night (03/31/2009)
This year’s Roe Green Visiting Director Series for The School of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University will be nationally-acclaimed director J.R. Kent State University’s Men’s and Women’s Choruses Perform Spring Concert (03/31/2009)
The Men's and Women's Choruses’ spring concert will be held in the sanctuary of the United Church of Christ of Kent, 1400 East Main Street, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17.  Admission is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted to support the touring activities of both choruses.  Parking is free.

Kent State College of Nursing Announces Four New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Recipients (3/26/09)
The Kent State University College of Nursing is proud to announce four new recipients of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's New Careers in Nursing Scholarship. Each student will receive a $10,000 scholarship toward his or her education in the Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Program.

Severe Weather Safety Week is March 22 to 28; Expect Emergency Alert Notification Tests Wednesday, March 25 (3/24/09)
As part of Severe Weather Safety Week, Wednesday, March 25 has been designated Tornado Awareness Day. On this day, the tornado warning signals throughout the entire state of Ohio will be activated at 9:50 a.m. Kent State University will participate in that testing, slated to last for three minutes, by testing all emergency alert devices on campus.

Kent State University Celebrates Honors (03/20/2009)
The Honors College will celebrate the intellectual and artistic life of Kent State University during its annual Honors Week on Sunday, April 5, through Saturday, April 11. The campus-wide celebration is an opportunity for the university to highlight its vitality and to provide its community members with a sense of unity and belonging to somethign worthwhile and enduring.

African Community Theatre Presents “Jar The Floor” (03/20/2009)
After a year of renovations, Oscar Ritchie Hall will reopen its doors for the African Community Theatre’s spring 2009 production. The theatre returns with the presentation of “Jar the Floor,” written by Cheryl West.  “Jar the Floor” opens April 17 and performances continue through April 26.

Ronald Mallett Speaks at Honors College 75th Anniversary (03/20/2009)
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Honors College, Ronald Mallett, professor of theoretical physics at the University of Connecticut will be giving a lecture titled “Time Traveler: A Scientist’s Personal mission to Make Time Travel a Reality” on April 7.

Kent State University Chorale and KSU Wind Ensemble Join Forces for Annual Concert (03/20/2009)
On Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. in Cartwright Auditorium, the Kent State University Wind Ensemble and KSU Chorale will present their annual joint concert. Chemistry Professor Received a Doctor Honoris Causa from Nicholaus Copernicus University (02/20/2009)
Dr. Mietek Jaroniec, Kent State University professor, has been awarded the Doctor of Honoris Causa award from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. Jaroniec was recognized for his scientific contributions to interfacial chemistry, collaboration with Polish scientists and promotion of Polish science and culture. The award was presented during a special ceremony on Feb. 19.

Kent State Announces Nearly 7.5% Increases in Spring Enrollment (2/6/09)
Kent State University announced today a 7.44 percent increase in system-wide enrollment for the spring 2009 semester. System-wide the university reports 34,222 students for the 2009 spring semester, compared to 31,851 for spring semester 2008.

Kent State Trumbull Announces Scholarship Program for those affected by layoffs (1/02/09)
Kent State University’s Trumbull campus will provide a one-time scholarship to new students who have been recently laid off from a full-time position, effective for the semester that begins Jan. 20. The offer is available on a pilot basis for the spring 2009 semester and can be applied to the tuition cost of up to 12 credit hours.
