Audition Guidelines
Music Performance Certificate and Master's degree applicants in performance and conducting, and those individuals who are planning to take applied lessons at the graduate level, regardless of their degree program, must audition in their major performing medium. Students planning a major in Performance (vocal or instrumental) and Conducting must audition in their major performance medium before being recommended for admission to the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music and will be expected to demonstrate ability on the level of the Bachelor of Music in Performance Senior Recital. While it is not required for admission, students applying to the Master of Arts and doctoral programs and planning to study applied music must audition.
For students residing at an inconvenient distance from Kent, an audition tape may be sent to the Coordinator of Auditions in addition to submitting the on line Graduate Studies in Music Audition Application Form. A tape should contain up to 30 minutes of material covering a variety of performance styles (and languages for vocalists). Students desiring a return of the audition tape should enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. A list of repertoire studied in the past year should accompany the tape or be brought to the audition. A videotape/DVD may be sent by conducting applicants who live an inconvenient distance from Kent.
Students who wish to major in Conducting should call the appropriate conductor to make an appointment:
Orchestra: (330) 672-2636
Dr. Scott MacPherson, Chorus: (330) 672-2909
Mr. Scott Curfman, Band: (330) 672-2515
A videotape may be sent by conducting applicants who live an inconvenient distance from Kent.
