Largest Cash Gift Ever Made to Kent State University Museum
The Kent State University Museum has received a $1.1 million donation – its largest cash gift ever – from local business leader and Kent State alumnus Gerald Schweigert. The donation, in the form of a charitable gift annuity, will be instrumental in the preservation and future support of museum collections and activities.

Kent State East Liverpool’s Nursing Lab Receives $70,000 in Upgrades
Through a matching grant provided by the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association (OMEGA), Kent State University at East Liverpool was able to make more than $70,000 in equipment upgrades to its nursing laboratory. Half of the funding was provided by the state through the Appalachian Regional Commission. The remaining funds were provided by Kent State East Liverpool. Recently, all the equipment purchasers were finalized.

Kent State Researchers Examine Emotional Impact of Acting White Accusation
Acting white is an accusation faced by many black adolescents, and it is one of the most negative accusations a black adolescent can receive from another, according to a team of Kent State University researchers.
A recent study published in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders highlights the emotional implications of being on the receiving end of the acting white accusation. Kent State researchers who surveyed African-American adolescents in Northeast Ohio found higher levels of anxiety among those who had been accused of acting white.

New Solar Panels Will Power Kent State University’s Field House
Kent State University is in the process of installing 1,716 solar panels on the Kent State Field House located on the Kent Campus. The panels will cover almost one acre of roof area or nearly 0.5 megawatt of panel capacity.

Askat Dukenbaev selected for Charles & Kathleen Manatt Fellowship
Askat Dukenbaev (PhD candidate) has been selected as a fellow of the Charles & Kathleen Manatt Democracy Studies Fellowship at IFES in Washington D.C. for the summer of 2012. The fellowship will give Askat an opportunity to conduct a research on the topic of his dissertation at IFES’ F. Clifton White Applied Research Center for Democracy and Elections (ARC), and have the benefit of mentorship from IFES’ international election and democracy experts on staff. Congratulations to Askat!

Two Kent State Professors Will Bike Three Hours to Work to Mark National Bike to Work Day
Kent State University College of Nursing professors Peggy Doheny, Ph.D., and Ann Jacobson, Ph.D., will ride their bicycles to work on Friday, May 18, to mark National Bike to Work Day. Doheny and Jacobson, both in their 60s, will ride about 30 miles to work in Kent, Ohio, from Jacobson’s home in South Russell, Ohio.

Students of the Kent State University at East Liverpool Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program showed off their green thumbs for the third consecutive year when they again partnered with the Garden Club of East Liverpool. Radiology students do well at conference
KSU Ashtabula Of the 239 students taking the Phillip W. Ballinger Student Assessment Exam, it was one from Kent State University at Ashtabula who achieved the highest overall score. Spring 2012 Radiologic Technology graduate Lori Mayfield was recognized for her achievement at the Ohio Society of Radiologic Technologists Awards banquet held in Cleveland in April.

Kent State Professor Receives $390,090 Grant to Continue Groundbreaking Parkinson’s Research
Parkinson’s disease affects about 1.5 million Americans, and it often leads to decreased independence and increased reliance on caregivers and the healthcare system for individuals living with it. But research conducted by Kent State University’s Angela Ridgel, Ph.D., shows reduced symptoms of the disease with the use of exercise using motorized bicycles.
Ridgel, an assistant professor in exercise science/physiology at Kent State, recently received a two-year, $390,900 grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue her work to design and test “smart” motorized bicycles, which could access individual effort, performance, skill level and therapeutic value in order to maximize the benefit.

Kent State Selected to Host Fulbright Visiting Scholars This Summer
Kent State University is one of five institutions selected to host the 2012 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq this summer. Dateline Delhi Website Launches, Features Multimedia Projects
Eighteen communication students and three professors from Kent State University spent 10 days of March in Delhi, India reporting on culture, environment, the economy and more for DatelineDelhi.org, a multimedia news website and product of the International Storytelling course. The site officially launched on Monday, April 30 showcasing student photography, video and feature stories from India.

Four Kent State Students Earn $3,000 Scholarships
Six area college students were selected for scholarships in memory of longtime Akron Beacon Journal editor John S. Knight and public relations professional Ludel Sauvageot. A seventh student has received a scholarship from the Akron Press Club. This year Kent State students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication earned four of the seven coveted $3,000 scholarships.
