An ordinary day at KSU is actually pretty exciting: Lots of people from everywhere fill the sidewalks between classes, catching up with friends, listening to music on MP3 players, and enjoying the beauties of campus, including recent painting on the Rock facing Main Street.

Our old friend Crankshaft (whose comic strip was spun off from Funky Winkerbean) reappears here driving a campus bus, again ominously numbered 13. While some of the passengers are distracted by flirting, others seem a little nonplussed by the driver and, with expressions of puzzlement or downright worry, check out details on their phones. With Crankshaft driving, you can’t always count on ending up where you'd intended.

While some of the passengers are distracted by flirting, others seem a little nonplussed by the driver and, with expressions of puzzlement or downright worry, check out details on their phones. Auction

Kent State University | 10/15/2012
Funky Winkerbean panels, depicting the high points of a college year through the eyes of the comic strips favorite characters, will be auctioned off during Homecoming 2012. The auction represents another part of the effort to endow a scholarship, for which a minimum of $25,000 must be raised.

These panels were imagined by Tom Batiuk, creator of the comic strip Funky Winkerbean (which has appeared in syndication since 1972) and Chuck Ayers, creator of the strip Crankshaft (which debuted in 1995). Well-known characters from both strips appear in this mural, which runs around the upper walls of The Nest, a focal point for commuter students, in the Kent State University Student Center.

Ayers and Batiuk, both Kent State alumni, have created a cycle which depicts the high points of a college year through the eyes of some of their most beloved characters. These scenes were created expressly for the Student Center site and, in some cases, make use of ins and outs of the wall in that room to create some views that will amuse.

The panels to be auctioned were drawn by Chuck Ayers in the winter of 2012 and installed in The Nest in March after they were scanned and colorized by riot creative imaging. The long hours of work of conceiving the story, designing and fitting the panels to the space, then colorizing and installing them, were all donated to Kent State in hopes of establishing a scholarship that would benefit, in alternate years, students in the Schools of Art and of Visual Communication Design (Ayers and Batiuk are Art alumni who have turned their education to work as designers and journalists).

The Auction Has Two Parts:

  1. A silent, held on Saturday, Oct. 20, during Homecoming activities.
  2. A real-time auction, held on Saturday, Oct. 20, during Homecoming activities.
