May 21, 2010 This is a landmark year in the history of Kent State University and Bowling Green State University. One hundred years ago on May 19, 1910, the Lowry Bill was passed, creating two new teachers’ colleges in northern Ohio. May 18, 2010 Chris Sharron, a senior cartoonist for the Daily Kent Stater in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) at Kent State University, earned a coveted National Journalism Award from the Scripps Howard Foundation. The National Journalism Awards honor the best work in the communications industry and journalism education each year. May 11, 2010 Alumni Jeff Richmond and Alice Ripley perform at a New York City benefit for the new black-box theatre space. May 4, 2010 As part of the university’s activities marking the 40th commemoration of the May 4, 1970, shootings, Kent State University held a dedication ceremony for the historic May 4 site’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places and the opening of the new May 4 Walking Tour, and hosted U.S. Congressman John Lewis for its 2010 Democracy Speaker Program. May 4, 2010 Kent State University reached a milestone in its social media efforts last month, when its Facebook page and fans saw the 10,000th Kent State fan sign up. The first person to notice when the fan count reached 10,000 received a blue iPod nano engraved with the words, “Kent State University.” May 3, 2010 Kent State University is presenting a wide range of events to mark the 40th commemoration of May 4, 1970. On that date, a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State campus ended in tragedy when guardsmen shot and killed four and wounded nine students. April 16, 2010 The Institute of Applied Linguistics, a research and training unit within the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State University, is one of a kind. The reason for its uniqueness is due to the international reputation of the bachelor’s to Ph.D. program, which is the only one of its kind in the nation.
