Congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio announced that the Kent Central Gateway project in Kent, Ohio, has received a $20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Kent State University, which celebrates its centennial this year, announced today that its enrollment for spring 2010 is up 11.6 percent with the release of the university’s official 15th day census data for the eight-campus system. The spring enrollment figure is the highest recorded enrollment for spring in Kent State’s 100-year history.

To commemorate the university’s 2010 Centennial, Kent State University commissioned a comprehensive study to quantify the economic contribution of Kent State and to detail the role that the university plays in promoting economic development, enhancing students’ careers and improving quality of life in Northeast Ohio and the individual regions served by its eight-campus system.

Eight students from Hillel at Kent State spent their winter break volunteering in Los Angeles, doing community service and providing assistance to at-risk youth communities. The trip was organized by Hillel at Kent State with support from Hillel International.

An idea that was sparked in December 2006 at a community wealth-building summit has become a reality with the launch of Evergreen Cooperative Laundry, an employee-owned cooperative designed by the Ohio Employee Ownership Center at Kent State University and a product of the Greater University Circle initiative and the Cleveland Foundation. It is the first of a group of employee-owned cooperatives in Cleveland’s Greater University Circle area, home to some of the country’s richest nonprofit institutions yet surrounded by some of the poorest urban neighborhoods. The cooperatives are meant to help build community wealth to transform Cleveland and change lives.
