Kent State University Assistant Professor Don Coates and his students are researching the use of rechargeable batteries for powering a vehicle. But their research is far from theoretical. The class has installed a battery-powered system in a used Ford Ranger truck, and they are getting ready to take it on the road.

Supporting student success and responding to requests for extended hours, the Kent State University Library is now open 24 hours, five days a week. James Bracken, dean of University Libraries at Kent State, said many students begin studying at 11 p.m. or later, and the university wants students to be able to “study when they want to study†by giving them a space where they can come to 24 hours a day, five days a week during the academic semesters.

Carrie Schweitzer, associate professor in the Department of Geology at Kent State University at Stark, along with her husband, Kent State Emeritus Professor Rodney Feldmann, have documented the oldest shrimp fossil discovered to date.

Select students and faculty from Kent State University’s School of Fashion Design and Merchandising are attending China’s 2011 Fashion Week in Beijing at the end of March. The invitation, extended by the China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), provides all-expense paid trips for seven students and three faculty members, compliments of the Beijing Municipal Government who, each year, sponsors an international partner for CAFA China Fashion Week. The seven Kent State fashion design students are showing four pieces each from their senior collections.

The Kent State wrestling program has carried a rich tradition that started in 1927, produced two NCAA finalists in the 1940s and over 20 All-Americans over the years, but one thing had always been missing...a national champion. That all changed Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center when junior Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio) etched his name into Golden Flashes history, pinning Oklahoma State's Clayton Foster in the 197-pound final.

Highlighting the Excellence in Action that occurs every day on its eight campuses, the university hosted Kent State Day at the Ohio Statehouse on March 16. A delegation of about 130 people, including Kent State President Lester A. Lefton, university trustees, students, alumni, faculty, campus and college deans, and community partners, traveled to Columbus for the all-day event.

Kent State's post season run continued on Sunday afternoon with a 72-68 win at Fairfield that advanced the Golden Flashes to the NIT quarterfinals for the first time since the 2000 season. The victory sets up a meeting at Colorado on
Tuesday night with a trip to the NIT final four in Madison Square Garden on the line. Game time is
9:00 p.m. and can be seen live on
ESPN. The Water Street Tavern in Kent will be hosting a watch party for Golden Flash fans.

Separated by just 14 miles, No. 1 seed Kent State (23-10) and No. 6 seed Akron (22-12) bring the biggest rivalry in the Mid-American Conference to the national spotlight with a NCAA Tournament berth on the line as the two meet in the MAC Tournament Championship game tonight, Saturday, March 12, at 6 p.m.
