Outright MAC Titles
It was more than two decades in the making, but Kent State became the first team to repeat as outright Mid-American Conference champions since 1990 with a 79-68 victory over rival Akron Friday night in the MAC Center. The Golden Flashes finished the regular season 21-10, including a 12-4 mark in conference play.
Kent State shot 68.8 percent in the second half (22-32) to overcome a 31-27 halftime deficit. The Flashes scored 46 points in the paint while holding a 37-26 advantage on the boards.
Junior Justin Greene led four Kent State players in double figures with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Rod Sherman -- the Flashes' only senior -- added 17 points and five boards. Junior Carlton Guyton and sophomore Randal Holt finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Quincy Diggs paced the Zips (19-12, 9-7 MAC) with 12 points, while Brett McKnight and Darryl Roberts both tallied 11.
Next Up For Kent State
As the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament, Kent State will more than likely play at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland.
