Kent State University’s women’s golf team captured its 13th consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) title on Sunday, April 24, with a 12-stroke victory over Eastern Michigan at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
Senior Sarah Bradley (Cambridge, New Zealand) shot a one-over 73 on Sunday to pace the Golden Flashes and finish as the team’s top scorer with an overall score of 11-over 227. Fellow Kent State senior Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) tallied a three-over 75 on Sunday and finished fourth overall with a 13-over 229.
With on-again, off-again rain testing the golfers throughout the day, Kent State was able to increase its lead over Eastern Michigan after leading by just five strokes after two rounds Saturday.
Junior Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) finished tied for fifth, giving Kent State three of the top five golfers in the field. Marshall shot a 15-over 231 for the tournament.
Juniors Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) and Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) also finished in the top 15. Morrow tied for 10th with an 18-over 234 thanks to a trio of 78s on the weekend. Germino tied for 13th overall with a 19-over 235.
In the history of the MAC Championship which began in 1999, Kent State has won all 13 team titles.
Kent State advances to the NCAA regional round May 5-7. Each of the three regional sites (Notre Dame at Warren Golf Course, Washington at Washington National Golf Course, and Stetson at the LPGA International Legends Course) will host 24 teams, with the top eight teams from each regional advancing to the NCAA Championship at Traditions Golf Course in College Station, Texas.
