JMC Earns Spot in Top 10 Of Ongoing Hearst Writing Competition

JMC 10th overall in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

With two students earning spots in the top 20 of the personality/profile writing competition, JMC now ranks 10th overall in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Senior magazine journalism major Anthony Dominic earned seventh place for his winning article, “Who is Lester Lefton?” the cover story of the December 2012 edition of The Burr, and senior magazine journalism major Rebecca Reis took 17th place for her article “Are You There, Donor 117? It’s Me, Your Daughter,” the cover story of the November 2012 edition of The Burr. Their winning entries were selected from 113 students from 64 universities who participated in this writing competition.

"Both of these stories appeared on the cover of The Burr, an independent student magazine that has been publishing award-winning, long-form journalism since 1986. I am so proud of Anthony and Rebecca for their excellent reporting and first-rate writing. They have raised an already high bar for contributors to this publication,” said associate professor and Burr advisor Jacqueline Marino.

"To be listed in the national top 10 for the Hearst writing competition is quite an accomplishment for our students and faculty. It demonstrates the capability of our students and the passion our faculty have for teaching,” said Thor Wasbotten, JMC Director.

The 53rd annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Program, in which 106 undergraduate journalism programs at colleges and universities across the nation are eligible to participate, consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio and two TV broadcast news competitions and four multimedia competitions, with Championship finals in all divisions. The program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
