2009 Distinguished Honors Alumni Award Recipient: Mark Sutter

Distinguished Honors Alumni Mark SutterFollowing his graduation from Kent State in 1984, Dr. Mark Sutter began his journey on a very successful twenty – four year career in the field of education. He first entered the field as a high school teacher for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City Schools.

Currently, he is the Director of Academic Services for Elyria City Schools where he oversees the day-to-day operation of the 15 schools in the system - The curriculum, instruction, standardized assessments as well as the supervision of the building principals fall under his leadership. He is also a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet and provides direct supervision to a staff of 7.  

Here are just a few of his accomplishments:

  • Serves on the Board of Directors for both the National and the Ohio Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Serves on the Ohio Graduation Test Fairness and Sensitivity committee
  • Serves as a member of the Endowment Board of Trustees for the Elyria City Schools
  • Was selected to participated in post-doctoral studies program in Harvard’s Summer Institute AND a program at Yale’s Child Study Center Received Educational Leadership award from the University Council for Educational Administration

Mark tells us that his Honors College experience has taught him to be a better writer and critical thinker. He believes that his experience also provided him with an intellectual challenge that prepared him for his future educational and career goals. We are extremely proud of his career success, and equally proud that he credits Kent State University and the Honors College with providing him with the educational background and leadership skills that have proved to be so valuable to his professional development.
