2009 Distinguished Honors Faculty Award Recipient: Susan SainatoPosted Apr. 13, 2009
Associate Professor of English Susan Sainato was named the 2009 Distinguished Honors Faculty Award recipient.
Dr. Sainato has served the Honors College for many years with outstanding teaching and dedication to Honors students far beyond normal expectations. Susan joined the Honors college faculty in 2004 and has been teaching for Honors ever since. She has directed a few Senior Honors Theses and supervised numerous smaller research projects. She has also supervised Honors book reading and discussion groups that our students seem to love!
“I know of no other teacher who puts as much effort-and successfully- into including innovative materials in her class. Dr. Sainato is totally devoted to her students and to their learning. She is also one of the most modest people I know!” said one of her colleagues.
One of her students emphasized that Dr. Sainato is “very approachable and enthusiastic. She was very knowledgeable about the subjects we discussed and she was always available for in-depth, one-on-one conversations.”
Another student said that “Dr. Sainato was knowledgeable, helpful, motivating, understanding, kind, and generous with her time. I greatly enjoyed discussing classroom topics with her. She was very encouraging and professional.” The same person goes on to say “Dr. Sainato’s Honors colloquium has been my favorite class at Kent State so far. Thanks for making the class so enjoyable Dr. Sainato!”
Such comments echo the superb Honors teaching evaluations she has received over the years. They are evidence that Susan is always thinking freshly about her teaching. Susan Sainato embodies the best qualities of Honors teaching- a passion for her discipline, high quality standards for her students’ work, and caring for and supporting her students as individuals.
