Master's Degree

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Health Education and Promotion (HEDP) is designed to enable individuals to pursue their diverse interests in the field while addressing the competencies essential to the professional development of health educators. Students can choose one of two concentrations:

• The Community Health concentration (33 credits) provides background for those who will be involved in positions of leadership in a wide variety of health-related community settings, as well as for those who plan to pursue doctoral work in fields related to health education and health promotion. This prepares students seeking the Certified Health Education Specialist credential.
• The School Health Additional Licensure concentration (35 credits) enables graduates to teach health in schools or pursue diverse interests in the field. Competencies essential to school health education are addressed. This prepares students to pursue school health licensure in the State of Ohio.

Students enter the master's program from various backgrounds, including health education, nursing, gerontology, sociology, psychology, allied health, nutrition, and environmental studies. Many students are employed in health related professions and attend the university on a part-time basis. To meet the individual needs of our students, courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening. In addition, some courses are web based. Students in the program utilize theoretical models of attitude and behavioral change in assessing educational needs, designing educational interventions, evaluating the effectiveness of program efforts, and advocating for creative and competent health education opportunities. These skills prepare our graduate students for various employment positions in local, state, and national government; K-12 schools and community colleges; health care facilities; worksite wellness programs; and nonprofit organizations.

Admission Requirements:

Official transcript(s), a goal statement, and two letters of recommendation. Admission into the School Health Additional Licensure concentration also requires current Ohio teaching license. For further information regarding application and admission, visit the Graduate Application website. For further information on the program, explore the HEDP M.Ed. Course Catalog. In addition, a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required in your undergraduate study if you are applying for the community health concentration. A minimum 3.0 GPA in your undergraduate study is required if you are applying for the school health concentration.

The program requires the completion of 35-36 semester hours. This consists of 6 hours of elective course or thesis option and 29-30 hours of health education. Please see the Plan of Study for Community Health and School Health Education below for detailed course information.
