  • Ability to recruit and work with volunteers is essential. 
  • Understanding of local agricultural and environmental issues and concern for improving the local environment and economy through local agriculture is necessary.
  • Ability to speak in public settings is required. 
  • AmeriCorps members must possess the ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, insects, etc.), be able to carry 40 pounds and to hike extended distances over rough terrain. 
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and valid driver’s license.


Location:

The “home base” for this position is Rural Action’s Eastern Sustainable Agriculture office in New Philadelphia, OH located at 1319 3rd St NW, New Philadelphia, OH (inside Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District’s main office) where you will serve primarily Monday through Friday during Rural Action’s office hours from 9am-5pm. Daily hours will be structured to meet your weekly average requirements for the service term (approx. 25 hrs/week). Some service hours will also be completed at Twin City Food Pantry at 109 N. Water St. Uhrichsville, OH.

You will also be serving throughout Tuscarawas and surrounding communities at various events and workshops. The ability to serve flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is needed. This includes working the Donation Station at the Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 3-7 pm and at the Uhrichsville Farmers Market every other Friday from 5-8 pm. You will have occasional weekend service hours such as for workshops and special events. Hours may fluctuate, increase or decrease, in consideration of seasonal changes such as inclement weather or other extended activities such as the summer agricultural season.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the daily operations and the overall growth of Rural Action’s Sustainable Agriculture Program in Eastern Ohio.
  • Assist at the Donation Station at the Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market by interacting with the public, procuring local produce for local food banks, and communicating about Rural Action’s work in the community
  • Assist with coordination, implementation, and promotion of workshops for current and beginning farmers in the “Whole Farm Project.”
  • Recruit, train and organize volunteers to assist in Sustainable Agriculture programming
  • Assist with promotion of  Sustainable Agriculture activities and projects including writing blogs, creating marketing materials, and publishing articles.
  • Participate in training and conferences as necessary to increase knowledge and gain career networking opportunities.
  • Complete activity reports monthly, required timesheets and periodic reports in the OnCorps  online system and through email.
  • Assist with food organization and distribution at the Twin City Food Pantry
  • Attend required AORC meetings and events.

Tuscarawas County Engineer
College Student Summer 2024 Job
 

  • Must be a high school senior or current college student planning to pursue a higher education in the fall
  • Must have a valid Ohio driver's license
  • Must be able to perform physical labor. Duties may include painting, flagging traffic, patching asphalt roads, sign repair/replacement, mowing, cleaning bridges and any other duties associated with the department.
  • Employment is for two summers and a maximum of fourteen weeks per summer. Students who perform satisfactorily in the first summer will automatically be invited back for the second summer. Start date and end date for employment is adjustable depending on the student's schedule.
  • Safety equipment is supplied by the County. The student will need to have leather work boots (no tennis shoes) and comply with our safety rules (no shorts, no dangling jewelry, etc.)
  • 2024 pay rate is $12.50 per hour for first year students and $13.50 per hour for second year students. Holidays are paid if student is on payroll at the time. No social security is deducted from the pay; however, a deduction for Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) is taken. This OPERS deduction can be returned to the student by application to OPERS three (3) or more months after final work date (with a minimal penalty for withdrawal). In addition, a Medicare deduction is taken.
  • Normal summertime work week is 4 ten hour days - Monday thru Thursday from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Please be aware that you will be subject to random and/or scheduled drug and alcohol testing as a condition of summer employment.
