Welcome to the Office of Student Research-Your Gateway into Academia and the Industry!

Kent State University is ranked among the nation's top public research universities for good reason. We encourage all students to work closely with faculty members, and engage in scholarly research and creative activities.

Through engagement in research, students at all levels develop new skills, broaden their career options, bring classroom concepts to life, share in the excitement of discovery, collaborate with others, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their chosen field. This contribution can be in the form of new knowledge, interpretation of knowledge, or artistic/creative performance.

The Student Research Experience provides an opportunity for students to collaborate in one-on- one research with a faculty member at any point in their educational journey.  Students benefit in working with a faculty member to acquire basic research skills and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In addition, the engagement provides students with hands-on experiences as they formulate decisions about majors and careers.

The Senior Honors Thesis/Project is a 6-credit-hour independent project. It may be a research, creative, or applied project and is completed under the direction of a faculty member.

The SURE program funds promising undergraduate researchers for eight weeks over the summer to engage in faculty-supervised research. The SURE program will support students with either a $3,200 stipend (40 hours/week) or $1,600 stipend (20 hours/week)  and on-campus housing if needed. Faculty may be provided with a $400 stipend to offset the cost of supplies/materials necessary to support student research. SURE is sponsored by the Division of Research and Economic Development, Honors College, Brain Health Research Institute, Healthy Communities Research Institute, Environmental Science and Design Research Institute, Global Understanding Research Institute, Anti-racism and Equity Institute, Office of the President and the Paul and Janis DiCorleto Summer Research Award Endowment, and the William Doane SURE Fund.  In addition, SURE is supported by the following individuals, departments, colleges, institutes and others

“Conducting research extends classroom experiences by transitioning students from the role of consumers of knowledge to that of active creators of knowledge. The joy and excitement of answering a research question of public health significance, inventing something that improves our daily life, or creating a work of art that inspires are simply life-changing.”
-Douglas L. Delahanty, Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Economic Development
