Abstract Guidelines for the Arts

Music

Supplemental materials to be submitted by music students are defined by the type of work.

  • For original compositions, students should submit a significant portion of the score plus and video of the performance via ksutube link. A full score must be available at the time of the symposium.
  • For a performance, lecture or recital, students should submit a ksutube link containing an excerpt.
  • For a research project, no additional application materials will be required.

The applicant's name, address, contact information, title, composer, and type of musical ensemble must be submitted via ksutube link.

Theatre

In addition to the abstract, students must submit a script and an excerpt of the performance. The applicant’s name, address, contact information, and title of the piece must be attached to the submitted script and a link to the performance via ksutube link.

Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Fashion and Other Applied Arts

In addition to the abstract, students may submit images of their work via ksutube link(no original work should be submitted) . The applicant’s name, address, contact information, title of the work, medium, dimensions, and date for each piece of work must be attached.

Video and Film

In addition to the abstract, students must submit an excerpt or film trailer via ksutube link that should not exceed 3 minutes. The applicant’s name, address, contact information, and title of the piece must be attached.

What To Know

Please note that students will be asked to submit two abstracts. One will be a maximum of 250 words, and the second will be a maximum of 125 words. The shorter abstract will be included in the symposium program.
An abstract should have the title, names of authors, and the body of the abstract. The body of the abstract should include the four elements describing the following:

  1. Problem/nature and significance of the topic
  2. Method/investigative strategy
  3. Results
  4. Conclusion

In addition to submitting an abstract, those in the performing and visual arts should submit additional applicable materials as outlined below.

Music

Dance

In addition to the abstract, students should submit a videotaped excerpt of the performance. The applicant’s name, address, contact information, title, choreographer, and the idiom of the piece (modern, ballet, jazz, etc.) must be submitted via ksutube link.

Theatre

In addition to the abstract, students must submit a script and an excerpt of the performance. The applicant’s name, address, contact information, and title of the piece must be attached to the submitted script and a link to the performance via ksutube link.

The Fashion School

The Fashion School will print student posters for the symposium: 

  • Printing is available for $20 per poster (for the Undergraduate Research Symposium only) while supplies and resources last. This offer will occur on a first-come, first-served basis. 

  • Students must allow at least 2 working days to have files printed.
  • Files should be available in PDF, TIFF, JPG, PSD and/or AI formats (No Word or PowerPoint files).
  • Students can bring the electronic file on a USB drive to 302 Rockwell Hall before 12 p.m. and after 1:00 p.m.
