Kent State University at Ashtabula, alongside Ashtabula County Medical Center, sponsored a free educational session for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018 at Robert S. Morrison Hall. "Providing Nursing Care in the Face of the Opioid Crisis" reviewed the impact of the epidemic on nursing practice; exploring methods that assist nurses in making critical assessments as well as providing appropriate management for safe care and recovery.
The featured presenter, Camille Zalar, MHA, BSN, RN, CARN, the Director of Education and Initiatives at The Northeast Ohio Hospital Opioid Consortium, educated participants on how to define the complexity of the opioid crisis on society and within the health care environment. Participants also examined the impact on various patient populations, healthcare providers, and the community.
The goal was for attendees to learn to recognize essential evidence-based screening methods for healthcare providers to utilize when identifying actual and potential opioid abuse, as well as interventions for medication management of pain in both those who abuse opioids and other patient populations. Zalar also touched on the recovery process and the role of the healthcare provider.
