Americana Service Cords
Americana Service Cords will be presented to Veteran graduates and graduates who are members of the United States Armed Forces, including ROTC Cadets who will be commissioned upon graduation.
Honorary degrees are awarded to persons of acknowledged eminence in the arts, letters or sciences, in the professions, or in public service whose contributions are so significant that benefits are recognized and acknowledged on a state, national or international level.
Instructions on how to obtain Honors Cords will be included in the confirmation email. Graduates who are receiving Institutional Honors will receive confirmation via e-mail from University Ceremonies. Honors candidates will be distinguished at the commencement ceremony based on their academic work completed up to the semester prior to graduation.
Institutional Honors are based solely on the GPA earned in ALL coursework taken at Kent State University, including original grades forgiven and/or recalculated under other policies.
A minimum of 60 semester hours must be earned at Kent State University to qualify.
Graduation with Institutional Honors is conferred on students who earn baccalaureate degrees with a GPA of at least:
- 3.300 cum laude
- 3.600 magna cum laude
- 3.800 summa cum laude
Special Note: For the purposes of computing the GPA and determining honors awards, the GPA is extended three decimal places and not rounded up. GPA’s will be recalculated once final grades are submitted for the graduates’ final term for the inscription on the diploma.
The President's Medal recognizes faculty and administrative staff who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of Kent State University through extraordinary and unique service. The Committee on Citation and Recognition invites faculty and staff members from all campuses to submit nominations for the President's Medal.
The Kent State University Medallion is intended to honor those who have contributed significantly to the university's well-being but who would not be eligible for an honorary degree or the President's Medal.
