Disability/Handicap Permits

Any faculty/staff member or student with temporary or permanent mobility impairment who has received a state-issued disability placard is eligible to obtain a Kent State University disability parking permit.

The University requires all persons who wish to utilize disability or general parking with their state-issued disability placard to purchase and display a Kent State University disability parking permit.

All faculty/staff members and students with disabilities are also encouraged to register with Student Accessibility Services (SAS), ground floor of Deweese Health Center.  Please call 330-672-3391 for more information.

The purpose of this policy is to help identify where disability spaces are needed, regulate the use of these spaces to ensure they are available for those who need them, and to discourage abuse by people “borrowing” a state placard issued to another person.

There are two types of disability permits that are issued:

Permanent Disability Permit

  • To obtain a KSU disability permit you will be required
    • to bring your State of Ohio disability placard,
    • the registration for the placard, and
    • a valid picture ID to the Parking Services Office.  Your information will be placed on file in Parking Services until it expires. When the State placard expires, a copy of the replacement registration and placard should be submitted to Parking Services to update your file.
Prices for disability permits are equal to the current faculty/staff or maximum student permit rates.
  • State Disability placards are available from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles; information/applications can be found on the web at: http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/vehicle_registration/placards.htm
  • Applications may also be downloaded from the BMV web site and taken to any local license agency or mailed to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, P.O. Box 16521, Columbus, OH  43216-6521, along with the required processing fee of $3.50.  Disability placards are valid for the length of time prescribed by the physician, not to exceed five years.

Temporary “Lot” Disability Permit

  • Temporary lot parking is limited to two lots for both commuter and residence hall students (including the area near the residence hall).
  • Individuals requesting temporary lot parking or temporary disability parking must
    • complete the Temporary Disability Permit Application  (also available in the Parking Services Office).   The physician is responsible for completing the form accurately and faxing it back to Parking Services
      at 330-672-4034.
Please note: the completed physician statement must be FAXED directly to Parking Services at
      330-672-4034 by the signing physician.
    • The application can be completed in the Parking Services Office at 123 Schwartz Center.  If the form is completed at Parking Services, it will be faxed to the physician for approval.

*Parking Services will issue a temporary one week disability/lot permit to use while waiting for authorization from the physician.  Once the form is returned from the physician, a temporary permit can be issued for a maximum of 4 weeks.
Current permit holders will not be charged for the temporary permit.
Those who do not have a current permit will be charged $7.00 per week.
If a permit is needed for a longer time period, a State placard must be obtained.
