"Cultures, Identities, and Racial Violence in the Pan African World"

The Department of Pan-African Studies at Kent State University is pleased to announce its third biennial Africa and the Global Atlantic World Conference that will take place at Kent State University, on April 8, 2016. This year’s conference is themed “Cultures, Identities, and Racial Violence in the Pan-African World” and aims to explore new ways of studying the complex experiences of Africana people worldwide.  Registration has closed for meals but we encourage you to register to attend the exciting sessions as well as the keynote address.

The conference kicks-off on April 7, with a Department of Pan African Studies open house at noon followed by a reception for “Show off your African Wear” starting at 5 p.m. in the Uumbaji Gallery Foyer of Ritchie Hall.  The keynote address will be given April 8, 2016 at 1 p.m. by Dr. Wendy Wilson-Fall.

Dr. Wendy Wilson-Fall, an associate professor of Africana  Studies at Lafayette College, will deliver the keynote speech titled “Locating Violence; Origins and Geographies”, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on April 8,in Ritchie Hall, Room 250.  Dr. Wilson-Fall recently assumed the Directorship of the Africana Studies program at Lafayette College.  Previously, she served as Chair of the Department of Pan-African Studies at Kent State University and as Director of the West African Research Center (in Dakar), where she served for five years.  Wilson-Fall works on themes of identity, culture, local histories and social space.  Her research and publishing include both African diaspora and continent-based projects.  Her new book, Memories of Madagascar and Slavery in the Atlantic, demonstrates through analysis of contemporary oral histories as well as historical records that the descendants of Malagasy slaves maintain African cultural traditions as their lineage.
