Portage County was selected as the winner of International Government Management Information Sciences GMIS G2 Award. The County received the award for its GIS (geographical information system) accomplishments!

Dr. Joshua Stacher assists The Carter Center in the Presidential elections in Egypt Dr. Joshua Stacher, an expert in authoritarian governments, assisted the Carter Center in the Egyptian Presidential elections. He was interviewed by various media outlets on the Egyptian crises and is currently a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Dr. Mark Cassell takes students to Germany on Study Abroad Program Dr. Mark Cassell takes a group of KSU students to Germany for a three-week education abroad program in Summer. The trip offered the students the opportunity to learn about German politics, history and gain valuable cultural, democratic and social experiences.

Coy, Director and Professor at the Center for Applied Conflict Management (CACM) was interviewed by multiple media outlets on the Occupy Movement. Dr. Rick Robyn named “Outstanding Ohio Teacher†by Ohio Magazine Dr. Rick Robyn, director of the Washington Program in National Issues (WPNI), was cited as one of the “outstanding Ohio teachers (who) are committed to engaging their students in the education process.†Dr. Robyn also won the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2010-11.

Askat Dukenbaev selected for Charles & Kathleen Manatt Fellowship Askat Dukenbaev (PhD candidate) was selected as a fellow of the Charles & Kathleen Manatt Democracy Studies Fellowship at IFES in Washington D.C. for the summer of 2012. The fellowship provided Askat an opportunity to conduct research at IFES’ F. Clifton White Applied Research Center for Democracy and Elections (ARC), and have the benefit of mentorship from IFES’ international election and democracy experts. Congratulations to Askat!

Kent State Students Experience Democracy in Action on Education-Abroad Trip to Germany Fourteen Kent State University students recently traveled to Germany for a three-week education-abroad program. The students gained cultural, democratic and social experiences while learning a little bit more about themselves in the process.

The students in the course were briefed by David Beach, the executive director of Green City on a Blue Lake, Chris Ronayne, President of University Circle Incorporate, the directors of Cleveland's Planning Department and Community Development Department, and city planner Marka Fields.

Prof. Richard Stanislaw receives the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2011-12! Prof. Stanislaw is but the latest in a steady stream of POL faculty members that have won this award, which is sponsored by the University Teaching Council and offered to the top non-tenure-track faculty members at KSU. He has also been recently named among the top five Kent State professors, based on a survey of students through KentWired.

Ph.D. Student helps improve Kyrgyzstan's governing capacity Askat Dukenbaev was recently hired by the Soros Foundation to head up efforts in Kyrgyzstan to improve the public administration in the country. His dissertation research is also center on public sector capacity in the Kyrgyzstan.

Congratulations Dr. Joe Drew and OEOC for Grants Awarded Congratulations to MPA Director Dr. Joe Drew on his receipt of a $145,000 grant from the Ohio Board of Regents and the Rehabilitation Services Commission for the Kent Vets Online program. Congratulations also to the Ohio Employee Ownership Center (OEOC) on receiving a $75,000 grant from the Heron Foundation and a $225,000 grant from the U.S. Dairy Association for the development of cooperatives in Ohio.

Prof. Nelson Burns Receives National Honor Prof. Nelson Burns has been selected by The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare to receive the Visionary Leadership Award for 2011. Prof. Burns is currently part-time faculty in the Department of Political Science. He will be among 13 individuals and organizations honored on May 3 during the 41st National Council Conference in San Diego.
