Writing Commons Hosts Workshop for Area Schools - Spring 2013

Posted Apr. 21, 2013

Tutors at the Writing Commons facilitated a workshop for high school students nominated by their teachers to become writing center tutors in their schools. The workshop is the culmination of a year-long collaboration between the Writing Commons and four area high schools: Roosevelt, Stow-Munroe Falls, Tallmadge, and Aurora.

"We are excited to see these high schools all creating their own sustainable writing centers," said Jeanne Smith, Writing Commons Director. Writing Commons tutors developed the hands-on activities to introduce high school students to writing center methods and pedagogy. Smith and her tutors have worked with high schools for several years. Smith sees the workshop attendance as proof that educators recognize writing centers as a pathway to student success, not only for the students being tutored, but also for the students doing the tutoring.  "Writing center work in always a valuable learning experience -- for everyone involved," Smith said.  The writing Commons is excited to continue its partnership with the high schools represented at the workshop into the future, and will continue to mentor and support the new tutors and their new writing centers.
