Kent State University is committed to helping transform Ohio. The environment at the eight campuses stresses academic excellence as a force for discovery, turning students into thought leaders who will shape the future. The end goal is for students to develop specialized and general knowledge and skills that they are prepared to apply responsibly in new and complex settings and thereby contribute substantially to the public good. The following items represent a small sample of success stories about Kent State students . . .

Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council
Beyond the classroom . . .

Ohio governor Ted Strickland appointed an Honors College student to the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council, a planning and advocacy body committed to community inclusion for people with developmental disabilities.

Students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication were awarded fellowships with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, allowing them to report on topics covered infrequently by American news media. A senior journalism major was sent to Ecuador to report on the consequences of the local farming industry, and a journalism graduate student went to India to cover the privatization of water.
The doors to a magnificent $3.2 million, 14,000-square-foot, high-tech Hillel center opened during Fall Semester 2008. The building, located on the Kent Campus, was named the Cohn Jewish Student Center in recognition of a gift from Gary and Lisa Cohn in honor of Gary’s parents, Victor and Ellen Cohn.


Ratasaurus
. . . and in the real world.

A Stark Campus biology major had her illustration of the terrestrial forerunner of the whale published in Nature, one of the world’s leading science journals. Another biology major at Kent State Stark presented her senior honors thesis project at the annual national meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology.

A chemistry graduate student was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes to support 10 weeks of study on mesostructured nanomaterials at Japan’s internationally respected National Institute for Materials Science.
As a member of the National Collegiate Scholars organization, an Honors political science major went to South Africa to participate in the International Scholar Laureate Program on Diplomacy and International Relations. Her trip involved making a presentation at the U.S. Embassy.
