Academic Affairs Strategic Plan

March 15, 2013

TO:  The University Community

FROM:  Stan Wearden and Carey McDougall, Co-Chairs of the Academic Affairs Strategic Planning Committee

SUBJECT:  First Draft of Recommendations

Earlier this semester, the Academic Affairs Strategic Planning Committee (AASPC) compiled and analyzed the feedback from the Civic Commons, 14 roundtable discussions, advisory, community and student groups, and anonymous feedback forms. In total, there were 2,570 comments across the six strategic directions.

The AASPC was divided into the following six sub-committees:

  • Ensuring Student Success
  • Enhancing Academic Excellence and Innovation
  • Expanding Breakthrough Research and Creative Endeavors
  • Engaging the World Beyond Our Campuses
  • Security our Financial Future
  • Developing and Recognizing our People

Each sub-committee was charged with reviewing the feedback, as well as the campus and college strategic plans, and developing strategic recommendations that are broad in nature and that provide guidance for campus, college and unit planning for the next three to five years.

During the course of our deliberations, we also noted feedback from specific issues that were not suitable for inclusion at the broad strategic level, but would be best addressed by specific units within the university. These issues have been identified and will be directed to the appropriate offices for further discussion and resolution.

At this stage, we are inviting all members of the university community to review the first draft of our recommendations and give us feedback so that we may strengthen our plan. Feedback can be given through:

  • Civic Commons
  • Email
  • Anonymous Feedback Form (Mail to Sally Kandel, Academic Affairs Operations and Administration, 208 Schwartz Center)
  • Open Discussion Sessions
    • Thurs., March 21, 11:00 am - 12:00 noon, 315 Kent Student Center
    • Tues., April 2, 11:00 am - 12:00 noon, 315 Kent Student Center
    • Tues., April 2 - 1:00 - 2:00 pm, Provost's Conference Room, 222 Library. (This session will have PolyCom to allow regional campus participation.)
    • Tues., April 2, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, College of Podiatric Medicine, Multipurpose Room, Ground Floor
    • Mon., April 8, 2:00 - 3:00 pm, 315 Kent Student Center
    • Mon., April 8, 3:00 - 5:00 pm, Stark Campus, Library Conference Room

We appreciate the involvement of everyone who participated in the data collection process, and we now look forward to hearing your feedback on the first draft of the plan.

If you have any questions, please contact us at swearden@kent.edu or cmdcoug2@kent.edu. We will be receiving feedback through April 10, 2013.

TO:  KSU Faculty, Staff and Students

FROM:  Todd Diacon, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

On October 1, I appointed a team of 33 faculty and administrators to the Academic Affairs Strategic Planning Committee. This committee, chaired by Dean Stanley Wearden and Associate Professor Carey McDougall, is charged with using the framework of the six university strategic planning directions to develop strategic recommendations for Academic Affairs for the next 3-5 years. I have asked the committee to engage in a highly consultative process allowing for faculty, staff, students and external constituents to give their input.

The Academic Affairs Strategic Planning Committee will gather feedback from across the university and base a strategic plan on ideas developed through in-person conversations, various round table discussions across the university, and through an online forum, The Civic Commons. The Civic Commons site will be open from now through December 15. Committee chairs will monitor and participate in the conversations. Directions for creating an account are available below.

Dean Wearden and Professor McDougall will periodically update the university community on consultation opportunities and overall plan development. Our goal is to submit the completed plan to President Lefton by May 1, 2013. I encourage all members of the university community to participate in the planning events so we can harness all of the great ideas that will improve our university for all.

Quick Guide to Create an Account at The Civic Commons

  1. In the top right-hand corner, click on "register an account."
  2. On the next page, review the basic guidelines about civility and transparency (this is part of what makes the conversations productive and useful) and check the "I'm on board" box. Decide if you are creating an account as an individual or an organization, and select "Continue."
  3. On the next page, enter biographical information and zip code.
  4. If you want to log-on through Facebook, select "Connect with Facebook" and you are done.
  5. If you want to register with an email address instead, select "Register with an Email Address." After you have entered the requested information, await a confirmation email and away you go!
  6. Now, click on "The Civics Common" widget on the left column of this screen and get started on letting us know your opinion!
