Students Prepare for Zombie Outbreak in Kent
Some 33 Kent State students are spending seven weeks this semester investigating a zombie apocalypse right in their own backyard. They’re enrolled in Zombie Outbreak, a new emergency preparedness and biohazard course taught by Health Policy & Management Assistant Professor John Staley, Ph.D., MSEH, and Environmental Health Professor Christopher J. Woolverton, Ph.D.

Childhood Wellness Research Conducted by Doctoral Student Marshall
Doctoral student and graduate assistant Vanessa Marshall is working with Children’s Hunger Alliance (CHA), Akron Children’s Hospital (ACH) and local elementary and middle schools in Akron and Cleveland on a two-year pilot disease intervention program to help reduce obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Northeastern Ohio.

MPH Program Welcomes Fulbright Scholar from Mozambique
Ramos Mboane, a physician from Mozambique, joined the college last fall as a MPH student in the epidemiology program. He’s a Fulbright scholar with particular interest in neglected tropical diseases, such as trachoma, the world’s leading cause of infectious blindness, which is readily preventable with access to clean water for personal hygiene.

Prestigious NIH Biosafety/Biocontainment Training Course Hosted by Kent State
Possessing one of only two officially designated National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program facilities, Kent State will host its second week-long education course for professionals across the country June 24-28.

Interprofessional Lifestyle Medicine Program Under Development
The college has received $47,000 in seed funding from the Kent State Foundation to develop a graduate education program in interprofessional lifestyle medicine, which will address cross-disciplinary management and prevention of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, obesity, insulin-resistance syndrome, osteoporosis and types of cancer.

HIV Load Research Conducted by Doctoral Student Tillison
Doctoral student and graduate assistant Ashley Tillison is working with MetroHealth Medical Center to determine the quality of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care in the greater Cleveland area, as well as to calculate estimates of community HIV load, through the Cleveland HIV Health Information Project (CHHIP).

CEPH Accepts College into Accreditation Process
The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) has approved Kent State to begin its accreditation process, a significant milestone for the three-year old College of Public Health. CEPH is an independent agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit schools of public health and public health programs.

Kent State has Remarkable Representation at APHA Meeting
Kent State faculty and students stormed the American Public Health Association annual meeting in San Francisco October 27-31, with two oral presentations, 10 poster sessions and a panel discussion. Topics ranged from hand hygiene to problem drinking, and some 16 Golden Flashes were there to share findings of their work with the 10,000 delegates.

Nursing Senior Spends Part of Summer Studying in Switzerland
Kent State University at Salem senior Lillian Kavishe took advantage of the University’s Global Health Immersion class this summer. Kavishe, along with other students from the College of Public Health, spent time in Geneva, Switzerland, where Kent State has an international campus. As part of the class, Kavishe had the opportunity to attend the World Health Assembly, which is held every May at the United Nations.

College of Public Health Honored for Role in Fugitive Safe Surrender
Kent State University’s College of Public Health was one of the partners recently honored by Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray with the Ohio Distinguished Law Enforcement Group Achievement Award for 2010. Kent State was recognized for its role in the Akron Fugitive Safe Surrender program in 2009. The award was presented Sept. 15 during the Ohio Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

Master of Public Health Degree Now Available at Kent State
The Ohio Board of Regents has approved a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree to be offered at Kent State University. Available through the university’s new College of Public Health, the master’s degree joins Kent State’s offering of a Bachelor of Science in Public Health (B.S.P.H.) and an 18-credit hour undergraduate certificate in public health. The university plans to offer doctoral degrees, providing the full range of public health degrees.

Kent State University to Offer New Bachelor Degree in Public Health
Kent State University has received approval by the Ohio Board of Regents to offer a bachelor of science (B.S.P.H.) degree in public health. Kent State University is currently accepting applications for the B.S.P.H. program for fall 2010, and courses will be available this spring semester through the Experimental Programs (EXPR) Division. The College of Public Health is also planning an undergraduate certificate in public health.
